P16 VMR - 2.9 Schrick'd VR

Recommended Posts

Sorry I don't get much chance to post on here but thought I'd chuck up some details of my project.

I was on the club stand on saturday at GTi International after the nice man from VW sorted an electrical issue. Sunday the car was misbehaving again so she never made it on to the stand or the strip, such is life. There is always next year.

Anyway my Mk3 started out as a Mk3 GTi 16V which I have owned since Sept 05. She originally sat on 17" BBS RX's, twin headlights, hella smoked rears when I bought her. Few things changed over time, wasn't low enough so on went some koni coilovers. I managed to get a full GTi edition recaro interior, vento front and some bodywork mods such as flushed washer jets, aerial etc etc.

Was then getting a bit bored of the handling and brakes so some eibach ARB's, 312mm S3 front brakes and a Mk4 caliper conversion were added with poly bushes all round.

I then decided some new rims were in order, picked some Borbet T's, originally 7.5's all round but the stance was just not right so some 9's for the rear made the journey from Germany. Arch mods were of course required, so father was drafted in to flare the rears. At the same time I got a smoothed golf front back on as well as a US front bumper off of Martin McB. The indicators were smoothed from this again by the old boy, and I picked up the car just before Ed38 06.

With the uprated handling the power was lacking. In went some of schrick's finest with a few other small mods and was producing around 170bhp but the idle was a bit lumpy for everday and it was all top end power.

After a dunken night down the pub I convinced one of my friends to part with the VR he had been building for a few years. The engine came out of a corrado and only had 15,500 miles on it. I also purchased a gas flowed schrick inlet, schrick big valve head (not fitted yet) and a few other bits and bobs.

So with the help of Martin McB, Big Stan, Jimmer and my father we started the project.

Will let the pictures do the rest of the talking as I am sure you are bored reading!

Enjoy

Before the recent makeover...

Sorry it has taken so long to get the pics up. Work has been crazy and every spare minute has been spent trying to sort out a few niggles.

Still got to get the exhaust fixed, new de-cat pipe made, new lambda then it should be 100% and I will get it on the rollers. Then will be the time to start saving for cams so I can get the head on. It goes well though, revs top end like no other N/A vr I have been in. Had a boy in a std escort cosworth looking bemused as to why he couldn't get by the other day...

Thanks for the comments guys. Glad you like it.

Martin, as you say worth all the hard work. It does sound pretty good even if I say so myself, you should have heard it on the rollers yesterday, sounded mighty fine. Shame you couldn't make it.

Should have an update soon of new bits to be fitted when I can get out to the garage and take some pics, and my rollcage is due in the country tomorrow :)

Going to have to get it booked into Stealth as well to get it mapped, will be about a 1000mile round trip though

Thanks Gav, which ones was yours?? Still lots more to be done but it is getting there.

Si - I did have the hella smoked rear lights on and still have them, prefer the cl ones though as they break up the black and match the orange us side markers. Thanks for your comments though.

Yep know the one Gav, was tidy :)

Well I got the car rolling roaded last monday, so here are a few poor quality vids and some pics thought you guys might like.

Car is down on power and torque, more so in the midrange as it is needing mapped. Should be sorted next week though as sending the ecu off on monday.

I felt sorry for the poor guy having to hold the wide band lambda up the exhaust!!

Woo mate, looks spot on, wasnt sure about the red rocker cover but it really works with the strut brace and other details!

Have to catch up at E38 mate for a few beers ;-)

BTW just had to resize your photos as they were fouling up the forum.

The red rocker cover came with the engine Rich, I have a silver one to go on when the head is done, it wasn't back from the coaters in time to be fitted for inters. The strut brace was fitted two days before inters as it was on back order, so it never got coated either. Not to big a fan of the red myself so looking forward to getting it changed.

Ye Rich, ed38 sounds good.

Sorry about the pics, normally resize them in photoshop first but forgot. My bad.
