ALSO AND MORE IMPORTANTLY DON'T WAIT FOR YOUR VR6 CHAINS TO FAIL........IT'S NOT TOO EXPENSIVE IF YOU DO IT BEFORE THE CHAINS BREAK!!!!!MINE IS 93K.....THINK THE LATER ENGINES HAVE REVISED CHAIN GUIDES/CHAINS/TENSIONERS

thegoth 5
Yes, as long as you promise to stop SHOUTING.Tighening the head bolts should be done in four stages.40Nm60Nm1/4 turn1/4 turnAnd obviously you should use new bolts.Did it give any clues before it snapped? IbiVR 0
Did it give any clues before it snapped? tbh 130k on original chains is a bit of a clue they need doing.... :-p Tom.
adam_christie 0
When you say "they need doing" I'm assuming you mean that the guides need replacing and not the chains? I thought the chains were pretty indestructable?
purple highline monster 0
they stretch and wear so its best to do it all at the same time just to be safe!
Chrisdut 0
if you've gone that far to strip it down i think you'd be very stupid not to replace the chains
adam_christie 0
Fair comment.......)Whats the average cost to have them done? Assuming it's a job left to professionals!I don't think I have noisy chains, but my car's done 104K so she's about due!
mk3anni 0
Mines on 99k, still not making a noise, but mines a last of the line car so i should have the later tensioners.
Seademon 0
Im on 78k and I have a slight rattle but Ive had it checked out by Tim @ The Phirm and he said they dont need doing

Gibs20 0
My car is only on 66k so shouldn't need doing for a while yet!...But saying that what does the rattle sound like and how do you know what noise the engine is supposed to make normally and what noises arn't meant to be there. Anyone got a sound clip!?
c4mbl 1
if you register with the site as a paid member mate, there is a sound clip in the members section im sure
Focker-out 0
I done mine at 126k and they were fine, IIRC the lower tensioner/guide was broken but TBH it really depends on what and how the car has been used, IMO a 100k motorway car is a better buy than a 50k town car!! stockers 1
the noise of worn chains sounds like a very noisy sewing machine
spanky 0
IMO a 100k motorway car is a better buy than a 50k town car!!I couldn't agree more. Mine, a '97 R reg, has done 108k, mostly motorway miles, with no chain rattle!
