binliner 0
Tell me if this is a stupid idea but Ive got a gear knob, gaitor etc out of an audi which is perfect except the leather is a little bit too short. Ive always thought the gear stick is a bit long anyway and was thinking about lopping 2cm off the top... question 1 is am I going to affect anything? &|question 2 how do I get the gear shaft out of the car so I can get a spare from the scrappy in case everything goes pear shape or want to put the original one back? Ive had a look but it seems like you have to take out the whole gubbins and question 3 is how many people will ignore the whole problem and focus on the words knob and shaft! six appeal 53
Justin I have taken a little bit of the top of the gearstick shaft in mine, as the Mk4 knob I now have fitted was a bit taller. It didn't effect anything. just made it feel as though the lever has a smaller throw. Some of the european guys have cut theres almost completely off, not sure thats going to be to practical, though, and to be honest I think it looks a bit silly if you take too much off! 28v6r 0
Paula??What do you make of this? and do you think that a great many of them are over exaggerated, worn and a little Flacid around the edges making for a poor "Change" on top Oooooppps Scrub that , I mean into top ( Edit button don't work!! Damn!) Or is it that Size doesn't matter for a great shift anyway, what d' think??...[ Edited Thu Jun 24 2004, 11:51AM ]
acf8181 0
don't shorten the stick...it moves it even further from the wheel. menas longer changes and less control.
binliner 0
do you mean longer changes because you have to move your hand further?
acf8181 0
do you mean longer changes because you have to move your hand further?exactly!it such a stupid idea, the sticks already too far away from the wheel. (if you need quicker shifts, get a quick shift, but then you'll beat the syncros, so basically we're screwed when it comes to fast gearchanges...unless you do what i did and mash the syncros to bits! hehe)

Im not doing it for quicker shifts its purely to make it fit!
