didnt know where to post this, so im putting it here. lol.

my speedo has died, it flickeres when accelerating and just sits at 10mph off the revs. what could this be? speed sender at the wheels or the actual clocks? any suggestions will be looked into. cos im bad enough for going fast as it is, im bound to get pulled if i cant even tell im speeding.

Probably the Vehicle speed sensor. It's at the back of the gearbox above the diff. Have you got VAG-COM? If so, look for an "Implausible signal" error on G68. Or possibly "Short to ground" or "No signal"

G68s are about £20 from the dealer and 15 mins work to replace.

i've not had a speedo for ages, changed everything except the cog in the 'box and the wiring...still no speedo!

all you need to know is this...

30mph = 2000rpm in 3rd,

40mph = 2000rpm in 4th,

50mph = 2000rpm in 5th,

60mph = 2400rpm in 5th,

70mph = 2800rpm in 5th.

i ahve it on a note stuck over the speedo for quick reference...but you dont need it...you'll find you know what speed you're doin!

  • 5 years later...

My speedo started failing - just randomly dropping to 0 whilst driving along then jumping back up to whatever speed i was doing. Now it seems pretty dead most of the time. Occasionally it will begin to rise a little but then drop back to 0 and stay there for most of the journey.

But now my fuel gauge has started doing the same thing although not so frequently. One min i'll have quarter tank, next its almost empty, then back to quarter again etc etc.

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

And the oldest thread revuval goes toooo...........

Cant help ya mate as I hate electrics

at least he searched first.

have you tried cleaning the contacts of the speed sensor plug. it's low down so is prone to grime.

Lol yer mate, does my nut in when folk start a new thread without searching first!

Cheers Nige,

Where do i locate this speed sensor?

Would that also effect the random fuel gauge?

a bit left, and down a bit, from the gear box mount.

when I first put the valver back on the road mine was disconnected - can't remember doing that or why I would - and the fuel gauge was a bit random. reconnected the speed sensor, and filled her up with petrol and the fuel sorted itself out. Might have been a coincidence.
