speedo 0
Hi peep`s..... My girl`s new vr has an intermitant prob of the abs light coming on, and when it does (mainly on start up) the heater controls and wipers don`t work!!! It only last`s abour 30 secs then goes out. anyone else had this sort of prob?? :?
FishWick 21
Very bizzare! Can't offer an explanation about the coincidental wiper/heater issue (hope the previous owner has messed with the wiring looms) but I can suggest you invest in VAG-COM. It scans both the engine and ABS ECUs. You can get it from www.ross-tech.com or www.vag-com.co.uk Having experienced both sources, I can say Ross tech are the better, more knowledgable people.Taking it to VW for a diagnostic check will cost you up to £80 per hour before they even beging rectification work, so £125 for the VAG-COM lead is a wiser option. Trust me, it will pay for itself many times over if your car is a 'keeper'.The two most common ABS failings are wheel speed sensors and the pedal position sensor. About £30 and £45 respectively. The wheel sensor would cause the ABS light to stay on permanently, so I'm leaning more toward the BPS.If you do get VAG-COM and scan the ECU and find any errors relating to differential diff lock check valve or any pump related errors. You're looking at a big bill.K
speedo 0
Cheer`s Kev, but i work at main dealer, and it hasn`t stoerd any faults. There isn`t any thing in the HST. And nobody has come across it before. It has got to be a short somewhere in the wiring, to do withh all 3 componants, but i thought i`d ask if anyone else had the same fault. I am ripping out the old alarm, as thats the only dodgy bit of wiring i can find
FishWick 21
Ah OK mate. Working at a dealer is mega handy. Take it you have access to the VW 1551/1552 scanning system then? No codes..... gotta be a wiring fault in the ABS loom somewhere. The ATE ECU is 100% accurate in it's reporting (unlike the Motronic 2.9 engine ECU) so if there's no codes, there's no faults, simple as. I take it you've taken the car out and jumped on the brakes to see if the ABS does indeed work? Trouble is, the car will fail the MOT if the blasted light doesn't behave.Well, I'm stumped sorry to say but let us know if you find the the problem!
speedo 0
Yer. I`m stump`d too. I`ll take out the dodgy alarm, and go from there.Hopefully it`s to do with that. At least i can look at it all.And yer i have axcess to the 5051/2. But no bl00dy faults, but Really helpfull usually[ Edited Sat Jun 19 2004, 10:08PM ]
VRmonster 1
i thought the abs light was supposed to come on when turning the ignition on, to test the abs? or am i getting confused as to what the problem is? and the heater/wiper controls not working is a scary problem, they should have nothing to do with the abs or alarm, lol. speedo 0
Yer, it`s supposed to come on with ign. then go out to say its all ok.If it stays on then theres a fault, so you only have normal brakes. But this fault happens every now and then, and when it stays on, the wipers and heater dont work. But it hassnt been for more than 1 minute, then goes out!!! x)
VRmonster 1
hmmm. very queer. youve just added another premium member to the stumped list. lol

acf8181 0
ok, not sure about the link to wipers, and presuming your car is OBD2 ('96 on)...does the light only come on below 12mph, or switch of when you go quicker than 12mph? if so, it a 'sporadic malfunction of a sensor' according to the big bentley book. presume it means wheel sensor. unfortunatly thats all it say
eViL 0
I'm guessing it's a Relay problem.I was having problems with my car stalling/cutting out and ABS light coming on.. I had to bash the dash until the ABS light went off and the car would spring back into life without turning the key!
Geastb 0
Let us know if/when you fix the problem - i've got wiper probs myself - luckily no abs probs (touching lots of wood!)
speedo 0
It`s not mine, but my girls `94 obd1 VR.....Evil.... did you change the relay, if so which one and did it cure it?
speedo 0
ACF, the fault is sporadic, and comes on with ign. regardless of speed. It can go out while you are sat idling for a few minutes, or after a mile or so of driving, but with out any wipers or heater!! :?
acf8181 0
its obd1? ignorw what i've said previously. this is what the bentley manual says to check...-tyres on all 4 wheels must be same size, and correctly inflated.-conventional brake system ok, including brake lights and switches.-check hydraulic lines for leaking, also check abs pump, calipers.-wheel bearig and wheel bearing play ok.-connector to abs control module correctly attached.-check terminals and sockets on abs compononents for damage and correct seating.-abs relay or hydraulic pump correctly installed/connected.-all fuses are ok.-battery supply at least 10.5volts.-abs control module ground connection ok.as yours is a '94, the control module is under the rear seat...i'd start there. antera309 3
When you get wierd intermittant electrical faults like this, it's always worth checking that water hasn't got into the fusebox, or any of the major electrical connectors. In particular, check the connectors that go into the ABS brain under the rear seat and the ABS pump in the enginne bay.
speedo 0
mmmm. done that. ... funny thing is, is that it has stoped doing it for about 5 days!?
