  1. Good luck, but I think that budget will only get you a fixer upper.
  2. Hi, DMS have got good reviews. They are also the only local garage that does Terraclean. The thing with the head sounds a bit strange. Did they get the new / reconditioned head on an exchange basis? In which case you would have got a lot more than simply a skim, but nothing returned to you. Anyhow, relationships with garages work on trust, so perhaps it is time to move on. Mototechnic are on the Chelmsford Road industrial estate. From DMS head out of town over the bridge then after the mini-roundabout it's the first Industrial estate on the left (w
  3. Hi, You should try Mototechnic in Dunmow - which is a good family run garage. They do all the work on my cars including the VR6 - the work on which included; Front hub. Front caliper, front pads. Both rear wheel bearings. Shocks and springs (twice!) plus top mounts. Air con regas. Auxilliary belt, pulleys etc (original disintegrated on the A120). Front wishbones (chassis bolts had to be soaked for several days). Diagnostics (airbag light, auto gearbox etc). Tyre fitting. So no major engine work, but as another pos
  4. Hi Jamie, A minor thing and not related to your problem, but looking at the photos that air filter is too small. It will be restricting the breathing of the engine. I had a similar size one my car when I bought it. When I swapped it for a bigger one there was a dramatic difference in performance and mpg. Cheers Peter
  5. Hi, There is a set on ebay for £50 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-VR6-Original-Alloy-Wheels-/182383615685?hash=item2a76e91ec5:g:FkcAAOSwA3dYPtRI They look horrible, but you get what you pay for. I bought a refurbed set from CarterLeeds on an exchange basis. Cheers Peter
  6. Hi, I think that its related to the immobiliser function. A lock set comprises ECU, CCM (aka BCM/BSI) keys and sometimes the key transponder as well. All have to match and talk to each other. This is common on a lot of cars. If you look on ebay for lock sets you will examples. Cheers Pete
  7. Power steering pipe, apparently for a VR6. Was bought for my OBD2 mk3 golf, but my mechanic did not fit it because; 1. It was different to the one that was on there (but the fittings were the same). 2. My one was not leaking, just had oil contamination from an oil change. Anyhow, here it is, very good condition, no leaks, swages in good condition and metal ends really good. So if you identify it, and want it, it's your for beer money. The flexible part of the hose is 65cm when straight. Basically a short flexible section, but long metal pipe ends.
  8. OK that's a deal. I will pm you with details, probably tomorrow. Cheers Pete
  9. £10 is beer money in my book. Extra if posted, but I'll have to weight it and find out how much that will cost first. Cheers Peter
  10. My personal view is; A lot of enthusiasts are anti-auto so they can be hard to sell compared to a manual. Needs air con and leather ideally, although red is a good colour provided it has not faded. Not enough sold and condition varies widely (as expected on a 20 year old car) to fix a firm price. But I think the range is £1000 for a decent runner to £3500 for a minter. A fixer upper is sub £500. You see cars advertised for more, but they don't sell. There are a lot of (manual) show cars out there at the moment. Original examples with se
  11. As it a says in the title, good condition fully working spare. Less than 80K miles. Replaced with a new one on my car during fault finding. So nothing wrong with it. Yours for beer money. Collection preferred from CM6 1BY, but will post. Cheers Peter
  12. Vr6 auto's are great cars. If you prefer a manual or you have diagnosed a fault with the auto gearbox that requires an expensive repair then the best value proposition is sell or break the auto and buy a manual. There are vehicles listed on here from £2k to £4k that are almost show quality. If you do the swap it will cost you money that you will never get back in the value of the car.
  13. Hi, Is there a bracket fixed to the floor that is used to mount the rear of the centre console, roughly in line with the rear of the front seats? Mine is sort of bodged with a screw through the side. If you have got the correct fixing then that would be great! Thanks Pete
  14. Golf VR6 Auto An ebay purchase in August 2013. I always wanted one so when I saw it for £1200 I could not resist. Had been resprayed properly in the past and had low miles....probably due to the gearbox problem. Ran it for 2 years as the primary car and did 20K miles. Have changed hopeless angle eye lights for Mk3.5 crystals. Used Koni dampers with H&R springs replaced dangerous lowered setup Cone filter (previous one was too small) Headlamp switch Crack pipe etc New aux belt and pulleys (failure of the these caused it'
  15. Between 26mpg and 30mpg (approx 11.3 - 9.4l/100km) for mixed A road driving depending on traffic and enthusiasm.
  16. I bought my Golf Mk3 VR6 with an automatic gearbox fault (unknown at the time). It would run perfectly for up to 14 miles and then shift randomly between 3rd and 4th. So I spent quite a lot of time finding out how it worked, testing it and finally diagnosing the problems. I think the later 01M unit in the OBD2 cars seems to superior to the 096 in the ealier cars. Both are only 4 speeds, so not very efficient by modern standards. It needs an oil and filter change every 80k miles or so. Only use genuine VAG fluid which is quite expensive @ 50 ish. The gea
