A weekend of maintanance
Therusterman replied to Woodyman84's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Regarding changing the spark plugs over, just take your time starting the plug in the thread, they should go back in nice and smoothly. Have you got a spark plug socket to help put them back in? -
Nice work Luke, bet your really happy with your work! Is the car your daily driver or did you book time off work and get it all done in the week?
-
Making some steady progress Luke, look forward to seeing the finished article!

Good to see you've made a start Luke. Have you got to the point yet where you took a step back and asked yourself 'is this really a good idea?!' I would like to do a similar thing with mine, but need it to get to work. Think it might be a bit of a rush on my 4 days off.

Water reservoir brown liquid
Therusterman replied to oolubs's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
If you take the cooler off replace the seals! Did this a few weeks ago, was a little tight, would be much easier if you strip the front end down -
Are you going to be tackling the rebuild yourself Lukey? Mines just rolled over 100k, and i've had in the back of my mind having the chains overhauled along with a cooling system refresh, where does it end?!

whats a good cheap'ish dignostic reader for the golf vr6?
Therusterman replied to paceo's topic in General Chat
I don't know if you'll get one that would read obd1 and 2, as the connecting ports are different. I picked a reader for my obd 2 vr for around £16, saved me lots of money and hassle getting the abs sorted! -
I'm a firefighter in the London Fire Brigade, couldn't imagine doing anything else!

Milltek system blowing at cat joint -SOLVED-
Therusterman replied to Therusterman's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Right, managed to get this fixed without the need of a pipr reducer. I noticed the mikalor clamp supplied with the exhaust wasnt compressing the exhaust pipe enough to create a seal. The other joins on the mid box and back box have a slightly larger diameter where the clamps work fine, but as the join at the cat is a smaller diameter, the clamp physically couldn't allow it to go any titghter. I orderd from ebay an new mikalor clamp, sized 55mm to 59mm. The front part of the exhaust measured at 59mm so i new the clamp would fit over this and still have room to compress a few more mm to create -
Just been browsing around on vagcat, looking to see if there is cover for the end of the gearbox (just like there is for the power steering pump) and found a listing for undertrays, but nothing is listed for the vr6. Has anyone fitted one of these before? Do they need adapting, and do they fit in place of the covers already in place for the power steering pump (items 7 and 9).

Milltek system blowing at cat joint -SOLVED-
Therusterman replied to Therusterman's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
No worrys mate, i'll be crawling under the car tomorrow with a vernier gauge to see what size i'm going to need. Did you have to shorten the front pipe any further? I've already lopped about 4'' off it when I first fitted it as it was too long. -
Milltek system blowing at cat joint -SOLVED-
Therusterman replied to Therusterman's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks lukey, you don't possibly remember what size you used?! -
Hello all, I fitted a new Milltek system a few months ago. Managed to get it to fit nicely with minimal knocking on the beam and straight tailpipe. I have however recently noticed where the front pipe joins onto the cat, even with the clamp done up as tight as it will go, the pipe itself is still lose and you can move it around. I understand the system expands when it hot, but surely it shouldn't be this loose when its cold? It seems to me the diameter of the pipe is slightly too big, so even with the clamp done up, its not clamping down on the cat. For reference its an obd2 vr with the longer

One of the best AND worst videos I have ever seen!
Therusterman replied to russj249's topic in General Chat
I think someones watched Ronin too many times... -
Was worried mine was bad! But this seems about right, i'm getting between 250-280 to a tank driving on main roads. Slight shock from when i had my 1.8 driver which was getting 450 miles to a tank (motorway mind you) but I doubt many people get a vr for the fuel economy!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i'm having similar issues...I've replaced the springs on the shocks and then gone to refit everything. When the top mounts are done up, with everything in place and no load on the strut, you can pull it down and away from the strut tower. Am i right in saying the load of the car would stop this from been a problem? Just the way i see it, there is nothing holding the top of the strut to the car.

Seen as the original exhaust on the ve is fubar, anyone have any info on what Janspeed exhausts are like?

Suspension refresh-what to replace
Therusterman replied to Therusterman's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Are they easy to replace? -
Hello all, got some lowering springs on the way, and a ball joint to replace. Was also considering replacing the struts and wishbones aswell, any suggestions on what to use? And whilst I've got everything apart, what else is worth replacing, oh and the front top mounts were replaced around a year ago.

Thanks for the extensive reply! To be honest, i'll probably replace the coil anyway just to be on the safe side and peace of mind, i like my cars with everything just-so! I had a similar problem with the icv/pcv valve on my previous BMW, and replacing it made no difference, but its on the engine for a reason so i'll add sorting this to the list of jobs. Thing is with the valve, is that its not obviously failed anywhere, it looks like the breather hoses were almost sweating oil?! Re the connector in the last picture, the first reply on this thread mentioned it was to do with U.S emmissions re

Hello all, recently picked up a vr and have found a few bits that need attention. The first is a slight misfire and flat spot that i can feel from around 1200-1800rpm. I took a look at the coil/plugs and leads and didn't notice anything unusual. I have read the coils can crack causing running problems, but couldn't see any problems with mine: Is this worth replacing despite no external signs of wear? Also who is the manufacturer of this part, iirc the name is printed on the coil pack, but can't remember who it is! Whilst i was having a nose under the bonnet, i also found this stray pipe: It
