  1. Yeah I was semi aware of this, I studyed that post on the vortex, and as far as I could make out the upper tensioner rail *could* maybe be accessed without removing the lower parts of the cover (blocked in by the gearbox etc). The tensioner bolt seems the more unlikely part to be at fault, and I am just guessing that it will be the tensioner rails/guides that are broken and causing the rattling. I spoke at length to a helpful chap at a VW dealer, and got all the parts priced for the guides (not the chain itself) came to about £30, I've got them all written down with part no.s somewhere here...
  2. They were ATE discs, not sure about the pads, but I'm pretty sure they were OE ones or similar. Fitted professionally at Midland VW. I'll try and dig out the receipt tomorrow. I can only think of maybe a sticky caliper, but that MUST have been checked when the discs and pads were done, as I said that judder was the problem. The guy even said my existing discs were practically new, but on inspection the inner side of the discs were warped. I hope there is not some underlying (expensive) problem here. :@
  3. I've definately got the sewing machine effect from my engine, which according to vwvortex is probably one of the timing chain tensioners being broken. Anyone want to help me replace it as I want to start doing more DIY things with my car as a hobby not to mention save on labour costs! I read that replacing just the upper tensioner rail is relatively straight forward, as the transmission doesn't need to be removed to access it. Any takers?
  4. I had all my discs and pads replaced in January this year after having problems with brake judder plus the rear discs needed replacing anyway. After taking it easy for about 500 miles to be on the safe side, the discs and pads were nicely bedded in and the brakes finally felt effective. However the brake judder has been gradually returning. First apparent when braking from high speeds 80mph + by a noticable grinding sound and the steering wheel judders. This has become progressively worse again, and the steering judder happens when normally braking (not especially hard) from around 40mph or m
  5. I've a feeling my chain and/or chain tensioner bolt and/or chain tensioner guide rail have a problem, my engine sounds similar to those sound clips. But can that sound be caused by any single one of the above being faulty/broken?? Spoke to Trust VW dealers in Stafford, they said they had never actually replaced a timing chain on a VR6 (probably because after 100k no one takes a car to the dealer for service!) but anyway, to have just the chain tensioner parts replaced, they said the job would take 15 hours! and cost £1200! The part numbers are as follows: Upper Guide Rail 021 (OR 071) 109 513
  6. my car has a rattle somewhere in the dash and since having the sub, everything seems looser too. and the left side of my instrument panel illumination keeps turning off, give it a firm whack and back on it comes. I blame ICE and pot holes. I can even get my rear view mirror to vibrate !amazed
  7. I must admit, tdi's are very tempting these days! The PD 150s especially! But I was researching a new car for my dad the other day, and came across the BMW 330D, now this is a car to be slightly concerned about in our VR6s! (320, yes 320 lb/ft of torque! 151MPH top speed, 0-60MPH in 7 seconds! with average MPG at 40MPG! All out of a standard 3 litre diesel car. I can see the price of diesel going up sooner or later with these kinds of cars becoming available!
  8. yep they did indeed. well at least that is what appeared on the invoice! the name of the oil' date=' not the actual oil !amazed [ Edited Wed May 05 2004, 01:22PM ']
  9. my last main dealer annual service, they used this oil.
  10. When i changed my headunit I found it was connected to the BUS cable, but the car had no CD changer! Also found a BUS splitter box in the passenger foot well but it wasn't connected to anything else.

  13. i'm with elephant, but as you just found out, they're not overly good with modifications
  14. oh how i can relate to this thread!!! the passenger airbag is a pain but i found it helpful to remove the glovebox compartment and thread the wires around into the centre console (easier if you drop the wires down through the headunit slot as gravity helps!) But the problem of how to make the headunit fit back in with all the extra wires and phono plugs is a real pain!! Almost got my hand stuck once or twice!! I found the only real way was to slowly push the headunit back into position (with all connectors in place) and then gently tug on the other ends of the cables where they emerge from the
  15. Well I'm going to look for a 3 door VR as mine is 5 door' date=' but I'm no rush really as I want to find a decent one! I can live without a car for a bit when I finish uni anyway. So I'm selling my bit's and pieces I bought for my VR just in case I don't get another! On that subject of suspension, I'm also considering selling my FK coilovers (also 2 months old) they are height adjustable only. If you find the going rate, make me an offer! Oh and the coilovers are FK Edition (part number FKAK05 for Mk3 Golf VR6 also known as FK AK). Cheers! [ Edited Thu Apr 15 2004, 01:25PM ']

  19. hello as some of you may know i have angel eyes on my vr and they are awesome! lol but i am planning on selling my 5 door VR as a standard car so anyone interested in my angel eyes? They are only 2 months old and I'll include the xenon bulbs I bought too. I tried looking on ebay but no one is selling them at the moment, so I'm not sure how much to ask?
  20. lol i'm still worrying about my engine making funny noises. don't thinking mine is pinging or even pinking tho &| thinking my timing chain needs checking. hope you get your's sorted! [ Edited Tue Apr 13 2004, 12:24PM ]

  22. cheers, i shall enquire at my local dealership soon... luckily i do have FVWSH, fingers crossed i may be able to claim.
  23. well one is in the rear door below the rubber seal around the hinge mechanism. the second is on the bottom of the other rear door, and i found another under the window rubber of that same rear door as it was pushing the seal slightly.
  24. Okay does anyone know if the Mk3 Golf's are fully galvanised and if so, what year they became so? I have a couple of rust patches and according to my manual if the bodywork is fully galvanised then I can get it repaired under warranty up to 11 years. Other wise it is 6 years and I am on a 97 P so that obviously is not happening! Cheers.
