  1. yeah sorry guys had my 4 pot brain in gear, the article on vortex was about the mark IV VR6 which threw me a bit, as like you say they are 24v (yet they say 12v?). Dunno why I was rattling (pardon the pun) about the 8v & 16v, think it's my over familiarity with the 1.8 and 2L 4 pots! [ Edited Tue Apr 06 2004, 09:11PM ]
  2. cheers for the advice guys. i think i'll head down midland vw when my next student loan comes in have little engine check up!
  3. ok just had a listen with the bonnet up, there is no noticable rattle from the right hand side of the engine (when looking from the front of the car). The noise seems to come from the left where the belts are. Have you got any pics of where to find the engine mounts? The noise is worringly similar to the sewing machine sound as described on vwvortex. [ Edited Tue Apr 06 2004, 09:07PM ]
  4. just coming up to 104k had an annual inspection in sep 03.
  5. Lately my engine sounds a little noisy, not a good sort of noisy, more like a rattle. It is not just when the engine is cold, but after a good run. I'd got out of the car today after the engine was run for about 20 minutes and it comes from the drivers side of the engine, which sounds like the chain? Does it need tightning, or am I just hearing things?? The overall running of the car is fine, same as it always was.

    renewed

Group 50?? I thought there were only 20 groups? Last time I checked, the 5 door highline was group 16/17.
  7. I'm with elephant as well, over half price what direct line wanted from me! Has anyone had a renewal with elephant yet? Are they still cheap after your 1st year with them?
  8. Stafford, Staffordshire (at uni) Loughborough, Leicestershire (at home).
  9. Mine is 18-24 around town, 28-34 on long trips depending on if I keep my speed steady. If I stay at around 80mph for an hour I get about 32 mpg. Have to say, I had to fill up with normal unleaded instead of optimax the other day, first time since I got the car in sep. My fuel economy has now increased, so I think I'm going to stop using Optimax for a while to see if my economy remains better.
  10. Not goin to the RR day &| Would have liked to but think I missed the boat a bit! lol. As for seeing with, this evening was the first time I've driven much with them and I was impressed (though I have just fitted xenon bulbs too!) I spent a while playing about aligning the lamps and it seems to be okay, the left light I have angled more to the left and the curb is illuminated fine as are signs, and the right light I also angeled down a bit when screwing it in and aligned it more to the left as well - doesn't seem to be affecting oncoming traffic, (at least no one has flashed me profusely y
  11. Glad you like. OllyK, those are with all bulbs fitted, just had the side lights turned on so only the angel eyes were on.
  12. Okay, and now here are the dark pics! Have to say I love my new lights!!! They look much better in real life too
  13. New bulbs arrived this morning! Just fitted the angel eyes! I'll take some more pics when it's dark
  14. They are black angel eyes made by FK, and came with only the side light bulbs for the angel eyes (no headlight bulbs incl.) and they take 2 H7 bulbs per side (not H1 like in the standard headlights). I ordered 2 pairs of xenon H7 bulbs last night, so shud be fitting them by Friday!
  15. air con is pretty pointless in this country, most of the time. But if we have another summer like last years, I'll be making much use of my air con 8o)
  16. lol, insurance is a weird one, almost as bad as how airline tickets are priced! But I can't complain at my last insurance premium at all, over half the price of what direct line were charging me, so it was still cheaper to cancel the direct line policy 4 months in (with 1 month extra cancellation charge) and change to elephant. !amazed But Pete, 2.5K! that's like buying another half a VR6 every year lol!! Still show's you must really love your car
  17. yep the window switch in the centre console is just for the rear windows, the centre part of the switch turns the rear window switches on and off (also noticed when set to off the illumination to the rear switches turns off as well!) lol.
  18. Finally got the 6mm sticky pads from Halfords as they only just got stock in. Number plates nicely installed both front and rear Cheers for the advice ppl!
  19. Insurance is a pain for us young drivers (and no doubt always will be), but it's also the huge amount of no win no fee litigation going on these days which drives our premiums up! Plus us lot with highlines have group 17 not 16 like the rest of you Golf VR6 drivers!
  20. I imported them from Germany (it's handy I can speak okay-ish German!). If you want some then let me know. Ended up costing me just over £340 in the end!
  21. ah ok, cheers for your replies. gonna have to think about doing that. i don't like having screws on them, the smooth finish looks nicer! and yes i am picky lol.
  22. Okay, did you basically drill the screws out? and use to screws to fix the plate on? Cause I was hoping to use the sticky pads, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to because the screw hole recepticals stick out too much. &|
  23. Just got some new plates, I wanted to use the sticky pads to stick them on instead of screws. Front plate was easy, just unscrew old plate, clean surface and put on new one! But the rear is being a pain! First of all the screws have rusted through, and despite use of WD40 and pliars, eventually the ends have disintegrated - leaving the screws in place! After much deliberation, I decided to snap the old plate off. No probs there and quite fun. However screws still in place! Now how do i remove them? I found that the screws are screwed into raised washer type nuts about 3mm thick which appear t
