Anyone know what the service intervals (and what each service entails) are on a mk3 Golf VR6?

I've bought a 1997® one, which has done 91500 miles, therefore wondering if I need to have the timing chain replaced - The VW documentation is a bit sketchy on service intervals!

VW recomend doing the chains at 100K!

Some ppl have had to do 'em before, quite a few ppl have gone well over 100K with no worries or noise! Depends on how the car has been looked after!

Is your Display (dash) telling you a service is due? in00, no. in01, minor service. in02, Major?

Cant quite remember the service specs off the top of me head, Sure ppl will give you more info on it.

Hope this helps!

if ur worried bout the chain mate i would get the dealership to check it when its in for the service

yea it just lets u know when ur service is due

the mk4 and mk5s do the same dependin if they on time and distance or longlife servicing,on longlife we have seen one customer do 32k without the service light coming on!

it all depends on how they treated too

Whereabouts do you live? There are a few specialists around who can sort you out, and much cheaper than a dealer (no offence to any dealers!). I have been to both Stealth Racing and The Phirm, both very good outfits.

I agree totally with Stuey. I had my first service at VW when I got my vr and they failed to tighten up all six of my spark plugs leading to running problems. The Phirm soon diagnosed and sorted it out - all for free. They and Stealth charge half the price of a main dealer and (in my opinion) are far more experienced than main dealers.

Service interval should be every 10k miles or 12 months (which ever comes sooner) with no gaps ideally! Chains don't normally need to be done unless you have symptoms... ie. a faint background raspy noise (not to be confused with the tappet noise which will always be present).
