Veedubbed 0 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 Well ill start of by saying hi, because im new to this forum.Just got myself a Nice Silver, 3 Door VR6 after owning a 1.8 16v Corrado. and had a little accident with it, was going to go for another one, but decided to try a VR6 Golf instead.Im loving the sound of the engine, it's just great. But im just beginning to wonder if theres something wrong with it. but never owning a V6 before im not sure.when I got it it was only running on 5 cylnders due to a pluglead, but I have that sorted and it sounds a lot better now. but still sometimes, when on deacceleration it sounds a bit spluttery, like it wants to backfire, but never does, but it just dosent sound right, and sometimes it sounds like it's searching a bit on idle. but maby im imagining it.im not sure how much performance I should be getting out of it, but it just dosent seem to be going as much as i would of hoped, it just seems to die at about 110, and stop pulling. but it feels like it should keep on going. got it up to 130 but that was at a push and took forever,I had the corrado to the same speed on the same bit of road, without much bother. the vr just struggled.Cant really say much more, im not sure if it's fine or not. and not sure where to take it to get checked out in the aberdeen area ? can anyone point me in the right direction. ? Seademon 0 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 Mine pulls strongly all the way up to 140+ - doesnt take long to get there either! As for your idle prob it could be the idle control valve or something depending if the engine is OBD1 or OBD2. I think the best thing to do would be to take it to a good garage that has VAG COM and see if anything comes up on the diagnostics. I've learnt from experince that you can muck about trying different things and wasting money when if you get it on the diagnostics you might be able to pin point the prob straight away. If you car seems to die at 110Mph it could be a number of things inc the MAF sensor etc.Get it hooked up and see how it goes from there :0) Link to post Share on other sites
SankysVR6 1 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 I would firstly get the car serviced at a VW specialist and also get them to run the VAG-COM check on it, and see what faults come up. If every thing comes back ok i would get the timing checked. Ferrari VR6 0 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 Sorry to hear you just bought the car and it has a problem mate, unfortunately as you can read from previous comments there's definitely something wrong...The VR6 really comes into its own at 80 upwards. The motor is incredibly smooth and gives relentless power all the way up to speeds well above 3 figures and it never splutters or wants to backfire...I hope you get it sorted out soon and it's not too pricey, i'm sure you'll have a much more enjoyable ride once it is sorted the VR grin will return good luck mate! stockers 1 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 hi mate,gotta agree with the above mesages.you should get it on a vag com soon as poss,if your close to the midlands i recommend stealth racing.sounds like theres nothing too wrong if you can get it to 130 mph,but getting there should be a real joy !dont give up on the vr,when it is running properly you'll have the biggest grin !!hope you get it sorted. Veedubbed 0 Posted June 2, 2005 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 yeah, I dont plan on giving up on it just yet, going to try get all the little bits sorted. i know 130, is a fair rate to be going...and I wouldnt normally be driving at thoes speeds reguarly...it's just that it would be nice to know that you could if you wanted to...;c)it still fairly shifts off the line anyway...and it sounds amazing..although imo, it sounded a lot better with a cat on it. i put the decat on and it seemed to loose a bit of the note that it had before the decat didnt seem to make much of a difference, i evan debated putting the cat back on just to get the noise back. ;c) Link to post Share on other sites

You have reduced back-pressure in the exhaust and that's what's causing the popping and farting. If the Idle stabilisation valve is kaput you should ntice a difference in idle between hot running and cold starts. You should have a problem ticking over in one of these conditions. Try removing the sensor and see if the idle improves? (it's under the back of the plug-lead plastic carrier, above the exheaus manifold) Link to post Share on other sites

If you remove thr cat you reduce back-pressure in the exhaust hence the noises. If your Idle Stabilisation Valve is duff the car will have idle problems when running either hot or cold. If this is the case you could try removing the sensor connection when the car is running and see if there's any change. Link to post Share on other sites
