Spec stage 3+ clutch slipping....slave cylinder shim? 02M DRP transmission

Recommended Posts

Got run in period completed yesterday on my new built BDE 24v turbo engine and gave it a little boost but am suffering some severe clutch slip when the boost really comes in. I'm using a Spec stage 3+ clutch and aluminium flywheel with an 02M DRP 'box and AEM tru boost to control the boost pressure. Software wise I'm a using United Motorsport 870cc ProMaf file.

After doing some Googling for similar problems in other setups I see The Phirm worked at Kieran's Rotrex R32 and seemed to have similar issues? These issues seem to have been resolved by use of shims somewhere? Possibly behind slave cylinder? The pedal in the car feels only what I could describe as "lumpy" and doesn't feel as if it completely engages when pushed to the floor...I never really thought much on that until now as I put it down to using mk4 setup in mk3 but it kinda ties in with the other symptoms.

I also need to cut down the boost pressure for now as I think it was getting too much, need to swap out the spring in the wastegate from 15psi to around 8psi and take it another run to see how it performs but I don't think it's going to make much difference.

I've seen on Vortex Nothing Leaves Stock do shims for this - http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5699170-NLS-02M-clutch-shim-kit-now-for-sale!&highlight=Spec

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Where is your biting point? Is it close too the floor? Does it only slip when the boost comes in?

Biting point is quite high and yea only when boost comes in. Need o try control the boost a bit better first to try get a better idea of what's going on.

I've heard a few people going on about spec 3 clutches slipping' date=' most just replace.

Sorry cant be anymore help

Thing is Craig, clutches are a bloody minefield...there is so much inconclusive information and contradicting reports out there, no matter what brand it is. I did research these before I purchased and found a lot of guys that had good things to say about them. I thought Helix was the Daddy this side of the pond until I saw one blow itself through the bell housing of a Rotrex R32 I was working on :(

Yeah I think you're right Craig, that's what I would go for as there seems to be next to no negative reports regarding them.

So does anyone know or have heard or seen anything about shimming the slave cylinder?

Yes new slave cylinder... in fact the whole box has been rebuilt with all new shims etc and built by VW technician who has the specialist transmission qualifications.

I would have agreed with you on Helix setup but that Rotrex one I referred to plus another friend with a 3.6T had issues too so that put me right off. Saying that I had a 4 paddle helix in the 12v setup and it was great.

I have something else to try first before anything else as recommended by very knowledgeable and experienced tuner from around these parts...

  • 1 month later...

Matt from UM reckons he knows exactly what's wrong, just have to test the theory first...seems like pressure plate isn't fully releasing so might have a couple of mm machined off the mounting face of the flywheel to compensate if this is proved to be the case. :)
