cbmotorsport 0
My mk3 gti was standard when i brought it back in 2010 , and since then there are several things ive done to her, ill list it as its easier -60mm spax krypton gaz shocks and springs-custom short shift for o2a rod shift box-Cloth recaros from a vr6 which i fitted heating pads to from a Bon jovi edition that was in a scrap yard-all ABS/Air bag fixtures ,fittings and wiring removed (youll see why shortly) -wire tucked engine bay-Aftermarket 6.5k HID kit-full alpine install (removed now, all will be revealed ) -US side markers-all cream interior plastics died black-suede headlining-poly bushed rear axle-the usual floor pan rust cut out and repaired-all led bulbs front and rear-TRS tow strap mounted to front subframe im sure theres loads more ,but none of it is important any more as my car was written off on the 8th september by some dosey bint in a fiesta that hit the wrong pedal and went straight into the back of me, just 3 days after id dropped the vr6 lump in. the car was inspected by a local bodyshop, and i went through a non fault insurance company, the bodyshop wrote the car off as a cat c. paid out £1000 (which is what i paid for it) and also let me keep the car for free. so i set to work in cutting out the boot floor, os rear quarter, os rear inner arch and the complete rear light plinth, stripped the full interior, every exterior panel was unbolted and every single bracket from inside the car has been drilled out and removed, the inside of the shell has also been fully seam welded. after hunting around for ideas, i decided i wanted to 4wd it using syncro set up with a modified syncro axle to run a haldex diff. after deciding that finding a syncro axle was going to be a financial nightmare, ive decided that im going to use a complete 4motion set up , including the gearbox, complete rear subframre and trailing arms and the propshaft from a mk4 2.8 4motion. please take a browse at the pictures below, all comments/critisism welcome. im easy going so theres a few pictures of when i brought it then i brought a set of 16x9 banded steels, because they were cheap, needless to say i soon sold them and got my standard gti wheels back on.funnily enough , with the bandeds on i was the only one that didnt get stuck getting out of my road in the snow !the next few pictures are of different silly things i did to it, all the work is done by me little bit closer to the floor, and for free as the bloke just wanted standard suspension so he straight swapped with me!HIDs fitted and gave her a polishSide markers wired upThe first of many exhausts i builtThe first audio installThe second, and my favourite exhaust after this ,not alot happend until i brought an complete vr6 for £100. included with the sale was a private plate M18 VRG which is also for sale the bloke i brought it from was sick of seeing it in his garden after he abandoned a mk2 vr6 swap! after a little messing around and recoding the ecu , she ran so we took the lump out, ready for clean up and the swap into its new home we stripped it down, cleaned her up and was left with this that picture was taken at 10.30pm i believe, i started taking apart and cleaning the engine at 9pm that friday night. the next 24 hours, involved the engine being painted and reassembled, my golf being stripped and engine bay prepared for the new power house, the engine being dropped in ,custom engine loom and all plumbed up and RUNNING by 9pm on saturday night, is this a record i wander? so from the above picture, it went to this please note the lad in jeans is not me, he is an 'associate' that thinks he knows everything about everything LOL so we took the 8v lump outand prepared the engine bay, swapped the shifter box and cables, hydraulic clutch lines etcyes this conversion was done on my driveway. and no the household management was NOT happy. but she came around when she heard it start . gotta love my mums enthusiam so we placed the vr lump in,and bolted her updid a spot of wiring modifications, and wire tucking unfortunately the next picture i took was after wed towed it to my work at 7.30pm to finish it off as it started raining some of you may have heard about this conversion whilst at ED38 , as many of my friends were there but didnt believe id do it in 24 hours aha. a couple of pictures of the second sound system wired up , ready to be trimmed, and also my suede headlining, yes it is in my living room ,mother was not home at this point so i managed to avoid having no dinner for a week . so all was good in the hood, except the exhaust , so at 2am sunday morning, i was still at my work building a nice 2.5 inch mandrel bent system, with some crazy tips. which caught fire when i nailed it, pretty cool look, not so good for the paint! so finally she was ready for terrorising some saxo owners. after a few mishaps with a loose plug lead, and a dead short for the wipers ( solder was still hot when i heat shrank and it melted through without me realising !" ;( the next 3 days were great, absolutely killed most cars that pulled up next to me,and scared the crap out of my friends who said i wouldnt do it in 24hours. then i was on the way to my dear nans house as she was keen to see it ( i have a strange family) when this happenddamage as follows-both rear quarters folded-bootlid-bootfloor-both lights-inner slam panel-os rear inner archbody shop estimated £3650 to repair. so the car was declared a cat c write off, at which point i jumped around (obviously with a stiff neck from the accident ) when they offered me £1000 and said i could keep the car. cbmotorsport 0
so , back in the safe surrounds of Badgers gardens, i set to work remove every damaged panel and fully stripping the interior, took me a few days ,but its all worth it ! as you can see there was a fair amount of damage, she hit me pretty hard!i think this is why i shouldnt be left alone with power tools, cutting out these panels revealed quite a lot of rust and previous filler , so im glad it happend then i took my favourite tool and made this as a basic structurethis was made to mount the syncro axle too, later pictures reveal that most of this MIGHT have to be removed the make the mounts for the 4motion subframe, but nevermind, its only metal so then i set about stripping the rest of the car,and left it as a rolling shell with an engine.then things got REALLY stripped.then she was tucked away down the side of my house for the next step, stripping the seams and welding them up. some are stitch welded, some are fully seamed for my own reasons .so the shell was welded, and began to rust in the damp, so day by day i did a little bit, cleaning with a wire wheel and then coating with 3 layers of red oxide to keep rust out, eventually the entire engine bay, inner shell and boot floor will be painted like this, until the running is fitted, then i can start work on a cage so i got some sheet steel and started the boot floor.so the boot floor was finished, now i needed to finish welding the holes in the centre of the car, but i wanted to have the shell at a decent working height so i made thisso the shell can do this the engine is also out now, and i have purchased a complete 4motion running gear including o2m 4wd DRP gearbox, all 4 drive shafts, prop shaft and bearings, complete rear subframe and brake setup and a haldex diff with 120k on them, all for £600. photos will follow when i pick the goods up. cbmotorsport 0
back to the world of the golf, today has been another day of GSD> (Get S**t Done ) . the car is now just a bare shell apart from windscreen and the front subframeive left the subframe in so that i can mount the 4mo box to the lump and line it up so i can fabricate the gearbox mount and measure up for the solid front mount , which will also straighten the engine up so that the 4mo prop will run level, once ive done that and made the mounts for the prop, i can mount the rear subframe .once that is done its time to finish prepping the engine bay and inside of the shell ready for the cage, as im going to tie the cage into the rear axle mounts. just for a bit more strength and rigidity. anyway enough chatter, here are some pictures from today, alot of the stuff ive removed is for sale as its no use to me anymore so check out the classified ads bye bye rear axlelovely space for a propshaft Then i started on the front end, removed Power steering pipes, bonnet and hinges, front brakes and remaining brake lines and the rest of the grommets and clips from the bay.as you can see my little frame is coming in very handy for this! so quite a lot done today. hoping to have the inside fully welded and primed this week to stop it rusting anymore, also got to start removing a lot of underseal from around the boot floor ready to make mounts for the axle
J5KE F 0
Nice skills fella!!Love the progress so far!!Whats ur time scale for completion..??Are u planning on big power?
cbmotorsport 0
cheers dude im hoping to have it done this time next year,as work commitments etc stop me from working on it every day, along with the good old british weather ! i could have it done for march, but that would be without doing everything i want to, im not desperate to get it back on the road so i can spend the time doing everything ,and doing it right first time. to start off with im hoping for 300 horse unless funds allow me to forge the engine and go a little bit crazy with other stuff, if they do, then im aiming for 500+ . but time will tell on the funding situation

cbmotorsport 0
Thanks for the support guys. Ill do my best to keep it updated as much as i can . Ive also got to build a set of chassis rollers once ive got the axles and cage done, so i can flip it over and cut out the sills and any other rust that i may find. Im very very tempted to cut the roof skin out and replace with a proper carbon fibre one what does everyone think?
legvw 0
Hi, welcome to the forum.Interesting project, its always nice to see some fabrication happening!Where can you get the roof skins from? But yes, why not cut the roof off, just make sure when your fitting your cage that it ties into the a + b pillars.

cbmotorsport 0
hi guys, again thanks for the comments its nice to have people that appreciate what im doing! regarding the roof skins, performance trim were my first port of call ,but it seems they have ceased trading, so i will be speaking to a couple of guys i know in the composites side of prodrive and renault forumula 1. basically im going to buy a new roof skin from TPS and have a mould made from that , then hopefully me and the composite bloke can start making a few up and selling them,so i will keep everyone posted on that as and when it happens. ive done a little bit more to the golf today, removed the windscreen and most of the sealant, and also chopped out the original gearshift box mounts and made and welded in a cover plate as im going to use a CAE shifter or something similiar. pictures below so thats another job off the list, i havent painted anything in the rear yet as im not sure how much of the original floor pan i need to cut out for the 4motion axle, and im also going to make a separate section for the exhaust to run through, so once ive decided what turbo im going to run and weather im going to by a cast manifold, or build a stainless tubular pulse manifold,. then i can get the engine mounted and work out where the downpipe is going torun so that i can finish making the custom bulkhead and exhaust tunnel.im thinking of using a garrett gt30 roller bearing, on a t3 divided flange with 0.78 A/R. But then again there are so many different options , i need to take a few more looks at build up threads to see what will be the best turbo,as i want something that will spool fairly quickly, but is capable of atleast 25psi . comments and ideas ? cbmotorsport 0
small update. have decided im going to run a holsten hx35 turbo with 0.70 a/r. also decided to go with megasquirt 2 extra standalone management . started stripping the engine today , its down to a long block engine now so when i get it in the shed on the stand i can start pulling it apart properly ready for head work etc. have also started cleaning the rust up inside the car so that i can finish of the welding , and will then red oxide it to stop it rusting for now, once thats done i can start stripping the engine bay and front inner arches ready to be seam welded and etch primered. then all that i can do is strip and clean the engine until i get the rest of the running gear so that i can get it mounted . once thats done i can strip it all out, and start work on the cage
VIW28 29
Why standalone mate?
cbmotorsport 0
Going standalone so that i can lose a lot of the standard vw wiring, and also for the live map capabilities , launch control and flat shift output.
cbmotorsport 0
for those wishing to run standalone, i highly recommend using www.extraefi.co.uk and speaking to phil . top bloke and really knows his stuff. complete standalone for mine including launch control and flat shift, tacho output, and a twin input knock conditioner .500 quid delivered with loom and instructions to base map your car to get it running so you can play with it moved the engine to the shed today , and ive also stripped my loom down, im running 2 main fuseboxes, one for the lights etc and one for the engine, and then a small fusebox in the boot area with relays/fuses for the 2 fuel pumps and the haldex motor. basically the lighting/clocks/interior side of the car has no relation to the engine running systems. for ease of diagnostics and fault finding, and looks trick with 2 fuseboxes mounted to an alloy dash. well, i hope it will
legvw 0
Sounds like a well thought out plan, look forward to the results.
