best for acceleration

Ok here's a question for all tuner and wheel boffins!!!!!!

I'm currently running standard 15inch rims. Now I was under the impression that 16's were better for acceleration. As far as I know, you lose acceleration on a 17 inch rim but what about 16's. The reason for asking is I had a mk2 and that standard had 14's I went to 15's and it's pick-up was much better, however when I was talking to someone about wheel choice, he said I would notice a difference in acceleration if I went up to 16's in that I would lose some acceleration, as this is what he has experienced.

So what have all you guys experienced and what are your recommendations??!!!

assuming you want to keep your rolling radius the same so your speedo is correct it's more important to reduce the weight...

there is a link on here in the members section that lets you compare the wheel and tyre combinations radius to gain a little but overall the final drive/gear ratios is the thing... (or FI)

Is that link in the premium members section?

I was under the impression that as your wheel got bigger, your tyre got thinner thereby keeping the rolling road radius the same. This is also why I'm a little confused as to which is better, as the OVERALL size of tyre and wheel remains the same??!!!!!

if your overall size (wheel n tyres) stays the same then there would be no diffrence it will only change if the overall size changes.

mad example is if overall size is 25" 20 " tyre and 5" rim change that to a 20" rim and a 5" tyre and it stays the same.

to gain acc you would need to change to say 20" overall be it 15" rim and 5" tyre or 5" rim and 15" tyre

Almost bud!!

It is the profile that makes the difference. The width really does not matter, you can run 205's on 17's.....Profile should be 40 though. I am currently running 205/45/15 Toyo's on mine at the moment.....Its quick off the line with great traction so I am happy! I am also a fan of having 205's on the car rather than the slight cheaper option of 195's. With 205's the handling, stopping and hard acceleration should be better due to that extra width of rubber on the road.

Like he said ;) .. I also agree on the 205 aspect...

just for clarity...as the inch goes up the depth of the tread comes down and this will affect the handling of the car which is why fully adjustable suspension is needed when you fit different sizes of wheels.. It can make it terrible handliing and braking...

so if you like

205/45/15

205/40/16

205/35/17..

these are not the actuals to run (I cant remember them off the top of my head) as you need to ensure the rolling radius remains the same and as you said thats in the premier membership section...

But if you're serious about increasing the performance then you need to decide what you want and what budget then FI/modifications here you come... ;)
