bungy 2
Pictures or a more indepth description will help us to help you buddy.
VR6Pete 1,455
Could be a few things in that area to be honest, dip stick tube, knock sensor, oil filter housing and oil cooler, it could just be that your oil cooler seal / gasket has gone. They got hard with time and heat... Pics would ve useful
Vw_owner 1
if you havent changed the oil cooler seals then do so, over time they slowly turn to plastic and dont seal, go to euro marque on the bridge they had them instock last time i went,
rsweeney 40
yeah i have changed them , is the best thing to do to take front end off and properly investigate it ? it only leaks when it starts and it comes out like a wave - spent another £25 on oil to have it come gushing out again ! Vw_owner 1
yea takeing the front off would help alot,if you got the time, when i did mine there was no room if i didnt have small hands theres no way idd be able to change them seals witout taken the front off, dont know how much room you got on a golf but im guessing not much?,if you can check them seals again {remove oil cooler and re seat seals if nessacery} without removeing the front then idd do that first. Gazbarber1982 3
I did mine without removing front end. A bit fiddly but it can be done. Is there not locating lugs on the cooler or the seals? I'm sure this was why mine took so long to get on right. I used my old cooler and new seals from tps when mine had a slight leak
VR6Pete 1,455
There's locatIng lugs on the seal I got from VW, gasket is fairly straight forward. did my corrado with front end on, however there's alot of clearance
rsweeney 40
whats the torque setting for oil cooler ? im smearing the seals with a bit of grease this time not sealent!
Vw_owner 1
2.5kgm {18ft.lb.} just did mine up fairly tight, hasnt leaked since i replaced those seals.
rsweeney 40
its leaked again from the front of the cooler. getting really peed off now , will put some oil on front seal then try again but im loosing patience lost loads of oil already spent £40 for it to spill out
Vw_owner 1
shit m8 somethings not right, you got the right seals? and as mentioned the seal that goes between the motor/cooler has locating tabs idd make sure there in properly they may have poped out when bolting it up?,,
rsweeney 40
yeah tabs are located its only the front seal on the cooler - the bit that bolts through which leaks. going to give it one last go - fingers crossed
VR6Pete 1,455
remove the cooler and take some photos for us to look at! something aint right...
Vw_owner 1
heres a pic of that bolt and its old seal when i did them for sh1ts and giggles, oil on that seal would deffo help to stop it twisting as you tighten it up,btw i dont know how you get your oil? but if your not getting discount on it go to auto elec and just ask for cash trade on it. VR6Pete 1,455
that seal looks fooked its easy to identify if the seals are knackered, they will be hard....
Vw_owner 1
yea thats what they were like, hard as fook!, the only time mine leaked though was if the car was faceing down hill or i had the back end jacked up, i was doing an oil change so i just thought xxxx it! lets get stuck in,did the knock seals aswell, added ptfe tape for good measure, i dont like leaks. rsweeney 40
these are the front seals , left is old one and right is new. the new one is slighty different ie without a lip - could this be why ? when i put it inside the recess the new one has a slight gap but old one is snug fit. it only leaked after these had been changed i think
bungy 2
I know you are probably fed up with it now but it is worth taking it all apart, making sure everything is really clean and take a couple of photo's before trying it all together again. Shame you are over the water or we could help more.
VR6Pete 1,455
these are the front seals ' date=' left is old one and right is new. the new one is slighty different ie without a lip - could this be why ? when i put it inside the recess the new one has a slight gap but old one is snug fit. it only leaked after these had been changed i think The gasket shouldn't have a lip. Is it a genuine gasket and seal you've bought from VW or one from a local motor factors?

bungy 2
That has to be the seal and can not be seating properly. When checked side by side are they the same thickness and when placed on top of each other are they the same width and diameter?
