donpulsar 0
Hi,Could someone point me in the direction of how to disable the ABS on the VR (thinking fuse in fusebox) ? The abs comes on virtually everytime I brake, sometimes softens the pedal, sometimes hardens the pedal - always with that wonderful ABS judder thru the brake pedal..and its even started activating the ABS when I'm not braking. Had to stop once with the handbrake this morning...dont want to repeat it going home tonight!Am guesing my ABS ECU is having a full on nervous breakdown! Thanks in advance,Steve. VR6Nat 9
but im not sure what removing any of the above might do tbh...
VR6Nat 9
oh and then your best bet is get it straight to someone with VAG COM who can give you a reading and tell you what the fault is...
DanH 1
Mine was doing that. Felt like it was stalling or similar. I removed it and is fine. Not bothered bout replacing it as full abs delete coming soonanyway
VR6Nat 9
my ABS hasnt been working since i bought the car, lol. Ive never had a car with ABS so dont rely on it... its just getting it through MOT is a bit of a mission if they're a picky garage.
donpulsar 0
Thanks for the info - really appreciate it as am at work so my manuals are all at home! :-)Will check it out on my lunch break - was a hairy drive to work this morning!A mate works at a VW / BMW specialist so will get it hooked up for a scan asap!I'd be interested to hear from anyone else running without ABS - had car's without it in the past so i wouldn't be too fazed with not having it. (Tho' is it advisable to run with it due to the VR lump up front?)Cheers! :-D
VR6Nat 9
No worries, ive got the manual as a PDF on my work comp, very handy!! lolIve not had any issue at all, the ABS is completely independant from the standard brakes so doesnt affect how they work, ive been 2 years without it and have never had a moment where ive thought i could have needed it. If that PDF isn't too big would you be able to email it to me at my work address - would be a big help whilst I'm in the engine bay this lunchtime? My email is : sandrews@higgins.co.ukIf it's too big then no worries!Cheers!
VR6Nat 9
It depends on who does your MOTs cuz you do need it for that. Cant send it by email cuz its over 500 PDF pages, aint gonna happen im afraid.. sorry. :S
Ben Seabrook 4
It depends on who does your MOTs cuz you do need it for that. not if you fit a non ABS dash blank from a different car ;)oh and isn't the easiest way to deactivate it to unplug the abs ecu ?

donpulsar 0
Lol! No worries on the manual - did think it'd be a bit big to send! Thanks for checking :-) If I do end up without ABS I'm sure I can replace the trim / unplug the ABS light. And yeah I'll find the ABS ECU and see if i can unplug it - located on the firewall? Ian_rogers 0
I've been considering removing my ABS all together, wouldn't know where to start tho lol
VR6Pete 1,455
this happened on my mk3..... ended up being a intermittent faulty abs sensor..... ABS would spazz out when tapping the peddle but only when turning left.

donpulsar 0
Cheers for the link :-D & thanks for the extra info VR6Pete, my rear drivers side sensor has been on the fritz so this could be why mine's going on a bender, but also been having the handbrake light come on & off a bit (fluid level ok) but will have a good look around on me lunch break! Timah89 1
sounds like ABS ECU then if the handbrake light is flickering on and off. I have had the same problem with the ABS playing trickery with me, been trying to find the time to fix it (hopefully this weekend now) in the meantime i have unplugged the ABS, just means the light is permanently on and the handbrake light, at least it drives normally now though. Taking the ECU out this weekend and cleaning up and seeing what condition it is all in before looking at re-soldering the connections up! fun fun fun
DanH 1
Yea I use one of them blanks too, but one without air bag light cos that was on too! If u fully remove abs u willneed a brake bias adjuster. It will go thru mots legally plus stops u swapping ends when u brake hard!
michael5556 247
Did all mk3 golfs have abs? As you could just go to the breakers and get one out of a 1.4?

donpulsar 0
Got the ABS pump disconnected and now I can brake without the pedal going hard, soft or juddering! Hoping to get it read on an OBD reader to see if its just a sensor or the ABS ECU thats causing the probs! Has anyone else who's removed the ABS fitted a brake bias adjuster?
