Guest SPLdrag
well, i found this in another forum1.8T pros-*hell one of the most legendary compact engine there is*so there are tons and tons of options for modding it*has stock turbo*very very easy to get power outta it*bang for buck for power mods*light*faster than a VR6 from a stop(mostly, 1.8T = 6.5-6.7s, VR6 = 7s, 0-60)*goes "whooosh" when you install a CAI, some likes it*great engine for casual sporty usecons-*you can only get so much outta the turbo*coz the stock k03s turbo is about the size of your fist *it's a 4 banger, and only 1.8L at that*so you can't really get much more than 400whp and wtq at the very very limit with top-end turbo and all, which you DON'T need I am sure*nothing special about the sound it makes, stockVR6 pro-*freakin' nice sound, one of the best sound V6s there is*compact V6*it's a V6*not bad power*have great potential, put some turbos in and you can run with high end sports cars, even ferraris*great engine for high-end tunerscons-*you NEED to have a LOT of money to really get great power outta the VR6*coz it has no stock turbo*and is a N/A engine, which means little power gain for expensive modes*so no bang for buck*but it's great if you are a serious high-end tuner and have the time and money to snap some turbos on it, which not many people do*and a little slower from a stop stocked
Guest SPLdrag
. . . .guess i'm alone out here
binliner 0
lol no you're not alone... I was thinking about changing to a 1.8t but decided to stick with a VR6... You'll get more tuning potential from a1.8t but its missing 2 cylinders! tbh its difficult to compare because most of us have UK mk3 VR6s and you're talking about US spec new cars.... so Im not sure what models you're talking about exactly... spec? mark@vagworx 0
Difficult, i've had a 1.8T powered Ibiza and the VR6.....completely different power delivery. If i had to chose........1.8T.
Macca 1
2005 VR6 + 1.8T? Are these the Mk4s youre talking about, as binliner im a bit confused Are you looking to get the new Mk5?Seems like youve summed up the two engines pretty well. I cant really comment on the 1.8T, but the one thing that struck me about the VR6 is how it has a refined, leisurely power delivery that makes it stand out.Are you looking to mod the engine, if so how much? this would be one of the main points i reckon.[ Edited Fri Dec 31 2004, 11:21AM ]
binliner 0
he's in Puerto Rico mate so Im guessing he's talking about mk4s
Slim 0
Aye, they've got the 24v V6's that are in our V6 4MOTION's IIRC. I'd have one of those over a 1.8T tbh.
FishWick 21
Agreed, the 24V engine is superb. Yes the 1.8T can be made to develop a lot of power but that isn't the be all and end all. Refinement, smoothness and effortless torque are also high on my priority list.It is a common misconception that 1.8Ts are cheap to tune. They are to a point, around 280-300 bhp but there after you have to consider the engine's inhernet weaknesses (it's a 21 year old block) and upgrade the internals. I've seen too many people destroy their 1.8Ts by pumping 1.9bar into standard internals.....To get the 1.8T to a reliable 400+ bhp, you may aswell turbo the VR6.
Macca 1
i dont understand why there arent more turbo VR6s around in the UK. In the states it seems to be much more common, judging from their forums.

MarkGolf 6
More VR6 owners out there (Bigger country, so you see more) Thats what I think....If your talking about Mk4's/Mk5's, its going to be a 24v engine, A great engine, BUT the 4WD systems are UTTER SHITE and they're quite unreliable in terms of the engine.. Had a fair few mk4 4motions come in with problems and the sales man hated selling em to their unreliability.. Mainly electrical probs and a few blown bottom ends!If your talking about 12v VR6's, wouldn't bother (Even though its my engine of choice as its a cheap conversion)I'd go 1.8T, easier to tune, up-rated parts are EASYYYY to get, alot of 1.8T specialists coming up and about, more reliable and quite a straight forward engine to work on so my mechanic says... 300bhp is EASY and fairly cheap to get and to be honest, thats all you need, the torque will pull you away from most cars you'll come acrossI also happen to be very close mates with someone who used to swear by VR's, but is now against term when alongside a 1.8T!If I wasn't so impatient to get an engine, I would have gone for the 1.8T over my 2.9VR! Guest SPLdrag
sorry for the confussion, didn't notice this was a UK site heheheh, glad to meet you guysthe features of the 2005 cars are the following:http://www.vw.com/gti/features_us.htmI just saw a video of the VR6 down the 1/4 mile and man, the sound of that V6 is one of the sweetest out there!!! , I just love it!! I'm planning of leaving it almost stock, Just add a chip, exhaust, cold air intake , nothing more than thatwhat would be a good chip, exhaust and intake for this VR6?any other simple mod for them?? taking out the 2nd cat?? ?! Eat this 2
i have a decat pipe an exhaust and induction kit nothin else i got 198 bhp and 187 lb ft at a recent rr day BUT by FAR the best thing about it is the noise i heard some1 else drive it down a straight bit of road and omfg i nearly wet myself it sounds fuckin amazin
VRVIRGIN 0
If you're gonna get a new car SPLdrag, then why not wait for the MK5 Golf GTI. 2.0FSI TURBO beast thet pushes 200BHP in standard form. It's come out here in Spain and it looks amazing. Surely Puerto Rico can't be too far behind with the VW range. There's talk of an R34, but that could be bull. You cannot beat the sound of a VR6 with an exhaust system either.
pete8tch 0
dont the 1.8ts need super plus petrol , wonder how eady that is to find in puerto rico
