Miss-Vw 2
I was in the exact same situation as you a few weeks ago. I brought my very first VR6 in January this year when I was 19. Brought it for £1300, looked very smart but underneath the cosmetics, it was a sh*tter. It was a 1994 and was on its second engine, the milometer read 118k but the guy I got the car from reckoned the new engine had only done 89k. Got it home, did a service on it - drained the oil etc. Tried to drive it again after the service and it sounded like a tractor trying to fly. The big ends had gone on it and I was forced to fork out £800 on another engine + labour to get it sorted. Now this was when I was determined to keep this car as a project...then I started to realise I had made a mistake buy spening out nearly a grand to get it back on the road. It was rusting, the exhaust kept splitting, the electrics in the car were buggered, then to make things worse I had a little bump in it so on top of the work that already needs doing to it - it now needs a new bonnet and headlight casings + a new grill...it was just getting too annoying for me and the costs were adding up. Then I realised that if I wanted a real project car, I would want everything mint - because my car had now had 2 engines put in, the mileage didnt add up and was all a bit confusing, I also didnt have any solid proof of where my new engine had come from and what the mileage really was, when I got my first VR - it didnt come with any service history, just a few MOT's.I decided to just bite the bullet and let it go and stop spending so much money on it and not getting anywhere. I have now brought a mint black VR6 Highline to use as a base car to start my project, it just makes more sense really. I wanted to spray my old VR6 black anyway, then I wanted to find a good enough engine that came with clocks and history...I found a highline that had the whole package so it would've been stupid to let it pass. You need to add up how much it's going to cost you to get it sorted, and how much you think you would spend on a new car. To get my VR6 up to scratch, it would've cost around £2.5k, and thats just a new engine replacement and a spray job with rust treatment! So although I have spent money on my other VR6 that is still sitting at home, I can tidy it up enough to sell it in my own time, get it an MOT and get rid of it - the money from that will go towards the mods for the highline
VR6Pete 1,455
i know i know' date=' and i know that its only just run in, but it purely in my head im scared of something serious going wrong with it, not that iv had any problems what so ever to date...i just think if i could get a younger chasis/body then it takes half my problems away instantly...i have slight rust issues underside! lol[/quote']not really mate, my R reg VR6 head gasket went at 89k on the clock and the rear foot wells were totally fucked at 103k on the clock, you could be buying an egg for all you know, regardless of the mileage / age.If your current motor is solid, build upon that, address issues as you go along, then you know whats been fixed / replaced already, unlike another car.highline stuff is a load of guff, my mk2 VR6 had recaro's, factory fitted tinted glass, climate control, the works, was better than any highline If your worried about something major going wrong, then go and buy a brand new motor from new with warrenty, its the nature of the game with any used car, and when your modifying them, its a slippery slope!write a list of everything you've done to it, or replaced up to date, who's to say another VR with a lower mileage wont need the same things doing to it at a lower mileage anyway?
