robvr6 0
when driving round temp gauge never gets out of the first white section, if however i sit in traffic ( rare where i live!) it will go up to normal and the fan cuts inas it should but as soon as i start moving again it drops straight down, is this normal ? i'm thinking probably not, [ Edited ]
DundeeDub 0
if its not getting out of the white section i find this unusual but if the guage is reading right it means that the coolent is cold. mine sits just below 70 and goes up to about 100 when sitting in traffic then back down to just below 70 after been moving for a couple of mins
robvr6 0
so it might be ok, it does move just not as far as i imagined it should, what oil temp does yours run at,i'm used to a mk2 gti that sat at 96 and the temp gauge that never seemed to go above 1/2 way
DundeeDub 0
the highest i have seen the oil temp recently is 96, i have just put in a new thermostat though, maybe yours already has one? Before i changed the thermostat i would see 90 in the coolent and 115 in the oil
binliner 0
thats not normal... my needle sits in the middle of the gauge (90 I think) and stays there.. sounds like you need a new thermostat or somethingOil temp should range from about 88-96 normally and up to about 120 if you're 'in a hurry'
andy 0
plse ignore ;-)[ Edited Tue Nov 23 2004, 11:19AM ]
Slim 0
Yeah my water temp gauge always sits slap bang in the middle after it's been running a few minutes, but I fitted a Neuspeed 160 deg thermostat at the weekend so that might not be the case at the moment. Oil temp is usually around the 90 mark, even in traffic.

robvr6 0
posted again to make some sense !after talking to bloke at work about this he said thermostat, so i phoned a vw garage and after explaining what happens, needle barely moves, oil gets to around 80 not especially slowly, heater works fine, he said the sender,so iwent and bought 1, will be fitting it in the morning as not to burn my fingers! and will let you know my findings, *when i mentioned the oil temp he said depends what oil you use and that the oil coolers are good on vr's[ Edited Tue Nov 23 2004, 10:24PM ]
Nerih 0
my oil temp usually site around 93 but usually becuase of my enthiusiastic driving gets to about 100...and drops off as i sit in traffic. However i always thought that if the guages were up straight (90 degrees to the horizontal) that that was the ideal coolant temperature. Which is why i never bother with it because its usually always pointing straight up (apart when cold doh )
robvr6 0
*update....changed the sensor.....and......fk all ~ exactly the same ! so not the sensor then, all of you that said the thermostat can chuckle and say i told you so, so car is now booked in for a service + thermostat change,
