Jordz 0
Hi folks. Bought a vr resently. Very occasionally there is a small amount of smoke rises from behind the steering wheel. It only happens when it is a hot day, meaning it is hot in the cabin, and when i start the car. I think it could possibly be just a build up of cr*p and grease but i dont know. Everything still works perfectly so i dont think it can be fuses. Any ideas 'cuz this is a puzzeler????

shail 0
Mine has done that too. I've owned my car for about 5 years and it has done it twice, always when its been hot outside. I put it down to dust.
Rikki 2
Its a few different things could be wiring rubbing together or iirc wper stalk. posibly just dirt and stuff on the horn connector part but its not unheard of it catching fire guys so be careful
Jordz 0
well its a few weeks later now and no dramatic fires yet-and hopefully there wont be haha. But it has done it twice in the month of owning the car but it always seems to be when its hot (well hotter than normal as i live in scotland) when the smoke appears. I just put it in for a major service and the guy gave me a deccently sized list of work it needs(mostly brakes)-apparently the abs light is not illuminateing-so i presume the guy has removed the light to cover up for a abs sensor being removed(another problem highlighted). Could this be anything to do with the smoke??
DanH 1
doubt to do wit smoke. check the lights plugged in 1st tho. mine werent illuminating cos they unplugged it cos the airbag lights always on (same connector as abs) so could jus be airbag and save the cost of doing brakes.do the airbag and abs come on wit ignition switched on? amazak 3
Ignition switch can also cause that.
Jordz 0
thanks for the help guys. Just went and had a look and the abs/airbag light and it did not light when the ignition was switched on. I took the unit out of the dash but then realised it was a sealed unit. I know it is possible to get into the bulbs but i dont want to brake the unit so could anyone tell me how to get to the bulbs?-i tryed pushing some clips but it didnt work

kebster 0
Mine has done this twice now but only when its been raining and the blower is on. I havnt used to the blower since as im too scared of her going up in flames its wrecking my head iv had the casing off around the ignition and sat there for 20 mins with everything on and nothing happened

Rikki 2
Only does it when its raining....then surely its to do with your wiper stalk not the blowers!!!!!!!!!!
kebster 0
Mine did it again yesterday so i removed the casing around the ignition barrel and sat and watched for 10 mins and the smoke is coming from the plug that attaches to the idicator stalk so i now have to source a replacement. Im going to change the wiper stalk aswell for good measure. Does anyone reading this thread have a good replacement? Hope this info helps.
