lowvr 0
even though this is the kind of post that shoudl be in general chat, i figured the people with the turbod cars are more likely to enter this subforumim seriously thinkin about turboing my car, ive almost got my funds together but im gong to have to work my arse off to get the rest of it! ...but i need to knwo is it going to be worth itat the end of the day there only so much you can learn from a forum ... so i was hoping someone out there maybe kind enough to take me for a little spin in their vr6tany takers ...promise im not going to be trying to steal your car or anything silly like that
rodney 17
the answer to any forced induction option is YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just Do it. You will NEVER regret it...
matty.vrt 120
DO IT DO IT DO IT the best thing i ever did to my vr was supercharge it the worst thing was i ever did was sell it.
craggsy 91
Turbo is savage power and I couldnt live with it day to day hence why I went the rotrex route. No doubt turbo boys will be along and say its fine day to day!!!Just my opinion and i've been out in both and it made my mind up for me quite quickly
jims13 6
well, i have to say , day to day mine is fine. but i may be the exception to thr rule. if you keep it below 3000 rpms, and dont provoke the throttle , its all good. however, poke the pedal hard , get to 3000 rpm, and wave goodbye to your arse.craigs been in mine , so im sure he can testify to its effectiveness. it also gathers speed at a alarming rate. its the one not to choose if you drive like a numpty, as it will attract attention. jims13 6
yep savage is a good word for most turbo cars, but it will depend on the spec of the turbo.id say supercharge for fit and forget, circa 300 bhp ( still enough for most )turbo, for brute/savage power 300 + bhp
craggsy 91
Well I got 282 bhp in mine with plenty of scope for more and quite cheaply according to Storm. New injectors and 10psi pulley will have it over 300 easy
jims13 6
yep rotrex's afre unlike most other chargers..z engineering and vortechs, are good for 300 - 350rotrex , skys the limits , it seemsturbo , much the same, power curve is more agressive though. ( only if the tubo's spec'd right )
craggsy 91
Rotrex work same way as turbos but not using esxhaust gasses. They spin at about 100,000rpm
lowvr 0
lots of responses loli have considered both options but the turbo seems more funmy car is a daily, but if you see it its already a bit more on the extreme side for a dailyi think a turbo would be fun as i enjoy working on the car also, so i think ill enjoy putting the thing togetherits terms of the drive i think tryin to tame it will be lots of fun too - i like the idea of havin more power than i need! loli have been out in a vortech-d supercharged mk3 and mk2, but not a rotrex or a turbod vrim still looking for someone to take me for a spin and to help me work out weatehr its going to suit my needs and also if i know someone is close by it maybe handy for advice/help during the buildif i as going down turbo route i was thinking set up wise: use a spacer gasket to lower compression until i can afford to build a low comp bottom end with low comp pistons and high strenth rods use a turbo such as a gt32 as budget wont stretch for a gt35rdefinatly use a short runner manifold due to plumbing easei want to use all metal turbo piping as i have the idea of boost hoses popping offc2 chip for management...and then all the usual bitsstill undecided weateh to use a charge cooler such as pwr or stick with a front mount ( to be honest both are good enough so what ever works out cheaper (total cost of cooler + piping required)
craggsy 91
Always over build what your aiming for. Read KevHaywires thread its all about his build, then read Jim Potters. Two different ways of getting to roughly the same place
lowvr 0
definately agree with the above statement - and yes i have read both ...excellent threads! lots of info and big respect to the people i want more power than i have now but i dont want to build it for RR figures to impress my mates - i just want it to have good street power that gives me a useable rev band so i can have some good fun with with my careven i picked the gt32 as it specs up nicely to the vr engine - i would prefere i roller ball bearing turbo but i think the gt32 proven what its capable of so i think my money is better invested saving for a r32 gearbox conversioni dont want to stress my engine to much - i rather run a little less power and have better reliability...so whos thinks they can hep me make up my mind weather to turbo my vr - or just stick to the easy vortech install (they both work out to about the same price)
craggsy 91
If you go the 02M gearbox route C2 sell the mount and adapter to convert it from 4wd to 2wd. Check that out as well. Its all the little things that add up that you dont realise about till you start building it
lowvr 0
yes ive notced c2 will sell a lot of little bits to hel with the o2m conversion - but theat whoel gearbox area is stretching it a little bitso i rather get the turbo set up in there on a low power set up and then understand a bit more about the type of power/power delivery i am dealing with - and then bang in the o2m (whilst i save up for it)the o2m conversion requires:o2m boxc2 4wd-2wd conversion platec2 gearbox mounts or fabricate both to hold in the box very tight02m shifter and cableb&m/or similar 02m short shift (personal preference i cant live without)new clutchnew flywheelanything else?im sure that lot piles upto over a grand if not more ...so i might aswel wait until i afford it properly ...and i hope my stock box will hold upto the beating as its had an easy 68k miles life
FishWick 21
My dealer mate tells me that according to ETKA, V5 Toledo and Golfs have a FWD O2M gearbox, which saves the need to plate over the transfer box hole. Can anyone confirm?Lowvr - If you like midrange torque, go turbo, it's as simple as that! A vortech does nothing until 4000rpm and then the boost rises very slowly and only peaks at the redline. The common mistake people make is "Vortech or Turbo, they're the same price?. The two couldn't be any more different if they tried. Turbos have a much bigger, more noticable power band. With all due respect, I think requesting a spin in a VRT and for someone local to be on hand to advice and guide you is asking a bit much. No one on here had such luxury when doing their projects, they just took the risk and got on with it. The only car you can try before you buy is one that's for sale. A VRT owner won't hand you the keys, so as a passenger, you won't feel where the torque band is in relation to throttle position etc, so kind of pointless really.Just go turbo mate, you know it makes sense :-)
Saunders82 0
answer to above im pretty sure the lean cupra r box from 2001-2006 is a 02m as i know someone with it in a 400bhp fwd golf 4 ! pretty sure that will apply to the v5 as well ill check at work if i remember tommorrow
lowvr 0
kevhaywire thanx for the response ive learnt a great deal from your main thread along...i dont expect anyone to hand me over the keys to their and i would nto want to drive it either as i would never take the risk of driving someone elses pride and joy that they have dedicated so much time and effort into...however you can learn a great deal from speaking to someone 1-2-1 communication. whilst building my vr6 (which started well before i even had a licence and well before i could even afford to insure it) i have met many people and made friends with a lot of them who i have helped and gone out of my way many times and they have done the same for me. i have generally found he vw community to be very helpfull and more embracing rather than competative ...on that basis i thought it wouldnt kill anyone to ask for a small helping hand ...i dont expect anyone to go out of pocket i would certainly repay them even for petrol spent of a small driveon paper a lot of things sound good and no offence but its clar that anyone who own a vrt is going to be slightly more postive and boasting about vrt's infront of a whoel community of people - most people who own one would probably speak of its downfalls on a slightly more private conversation ...so thats the only reason i wanted to speak to some owners face to facei have spent over the last year and more learning about vr turbo theory even before posting up and although i do know what my ideal set up woudl i simply can nto afford it ..i calculated doing as much work as i could possible do my self i a realisticly looking at spending around 11k...so ive come to terms with building something for street power than i can run reliably and that will let me have lots of fun as i have nw come to the limit of how fast i can drive mycar with the power i have regarding thr fwd 02m gearbox ..yes it is tru and the gearbox is found in a seat leon as i know of someone running it in his vr6 turbo somewhere up in london (when i say running the car is under construction and has been for about the last 3 years, the person buliding it can not help me that much as the car is being paid for and built by a company - its not a home build)for my own application (due to financial constraints) i am hoping to just use my low milage vr6 gearbox coupled with an gearbox oil cooler as i know of a couple of people from zee motherland germany that have had good results with that on cars that have been around for over the last 3 yearsthanx for the help anyways i guess its all upto me from here on...and almost forgot yes i do like midrange torque
Ben Seabrook 4
mate it's a shame that no one around your way has one but if you are along at some of the shows and one of our members in there turboed car is there I am sure they would be more than happy to show you what it can do :) also when you start your project please bung up a build thread as everyone would be interested to see what you are doing with it and then peeps like Kev, Jim, Craig, Tony etc and some of the Norway boys can give you some input and advice along the way :)
cabrioman 6
i`ve always said if u oe when i do it again id go turbo love my v9 but like the raw power of a turbo more ....

MaidenVR6 26
Ive done Z-Engineering supercharger.Ive done turbo set up in two stages.Ive done stock 02A w/LSDIve done 02A with SQS forged gears.Ive done 02M w/lsd.I think a cheap ZR2 charger will be nice. It pulls around 260 crank hp at 9 psi. That way everything can be kept stock, and things will not break. And if you are OBD2, I have a OEM Z chip for you.If you want to play a little more with power, go turbo. Its so much fun, and my engine has been very realible. The drivetrain is not.Get a turbo with +- 0.81 hotside.Run around 15 psi, and your gearbox will be fine. Offcourse with a upgraded clutch and a LSD diff.I also have a complete C2 42# OBD2 fuel program setup I might sell.
lowvr 0
thanx for the input maidenvr6 my cars an obd1 coilpack, i think if im going to bother getting a lsd i mightaswel go down the 02m route i think in the long run it will prove more cost efficient
