Is it wise to clean the engine with a steam cleaner?

My instinct tells me no, but many a time i've seen the boys in the washbay at my VW garage blasting the engines with a steam gun.

I'll purchasing a VR6 this week and after having 2 new 1.8Ts i want to keep the engine and the bay clean and nice looking.

Any advice?

if theres nothing wrong with the engine before (i.e. no leaks or cracked leads) it should be fine.

i steam cleaned with an industrial cleaner an old nova engine bay years ago, came up like brand new (and i mean like brand new) but ran on 3 cylinders all the way home as the inlet gasket leaked! was fine a few hours later tho.
