I am just aquired some 6 spoke Audi TT 17 " alloys and am going be fitting them to my VR, I will only be using them during the summer months.

Firstly what size would you recomend and if you have pics to show on a similer alloy it would be better

Secondly which brand and type

What width are th wheels?

i'm sure they are 7.5j

i was thinking 205/40/17 but just wasn't sure,

i can get a big discount on tyres through one of my doorstaff working in a garage and him getting me his staff discount, think i might have just found a spare wheel on e-bay for 99p just now. looks dodgy but for that price i think its a risk i'm gonna take

I've just been looking into which tyres to get as well.

This is all what I've been told - not my own words - so don't shoot me down for it!

Out of it all what I have managed to pick up is that Goodyear Eagle F1's are supposed to be a better tyre than Toyo Proxes T1S. But I was also told that you will only get the benefit if you are always driving the car to the limit - & I don't mean driving it hard on the road like we all like to do - I mean driving it on a track - I was told that even then only extremely good drivers who can really put the car on the edge will spot the difference ?!

I was also told that the Proxes will last slightly longer and are cheaper so are definitely the choise for a road driver.

I think I'm going to go for the T1R - the difference being that they have what can only be described as a band about 2 inch wide at the edge of the tread. Apprently the weakness with the T1S was that the shoulders of the tyre were weak so kind of gave when you were putting it hard into the corners :(

Toyo have done their research and this bad is 'supposed' to resolve the problem. :P

For 205/45/16's I have been quoted £79 a corner - all in, for both the T1S's and T1R's.

When I was in the garage having a look at the difference betwen them, a guy was in there who had an MR2 on a R plate. He was taking the T1S's off and having T1R's put on. It will be about 2 weeks before I get my alloys back from being re-furbed. I got this guy's number so I'm going to give him a call before I buy mine to see which he thinks is the best.

If it's not too late I'll let you know ;)

my opinion on tyres -

toyo t1s - prob best in dry, not good in wet, not good wear rate, cheap tho. (not made any more tho)

toyo t1r - better in wet, better wear rate, not so good in dry, cheap.

uniroyal rallye540 - awesome in wet, awesome longitudal grip (traction & braking), average lateral grip, very very progressive though, superb wear, not too pricey, very quite, do take a while to bed in tho and tricky when new.

uniroyal rainsport - even better than rallye540 in wet, not so good in dry or as progressive (can feel the blocks moving about).

goodyear eagle f1 gsd2 - average according to a mate, but not too good a wear rate.

goodyear eagle f1 gsd3 - very very good in every aspect, but pricey, i've alos heard of a lot of failures (hence why i never got them).

i use rallye540's on my car and the girlfriends, love them.

Have to disagree about the Toyo T1S's being poor in the wet Andy :o ...

Ive had them on 3 cars and wet weather grip is fantastic - fantastic feel and progressive when they do let go - wear rate is not great admittedly but you cant have everything can you ?! .....

anyone who has any info on pzero's would be great' date=' i really need to know if they are suitable winter tyres or not.[/quote']

Have a look in this week's Autocar - it's their annual tyre test issue.

A Vauxhall Monaro was 4 seconds a lap quicker in the wet on Goodyear Eagles and stopped 10m shorter than it did on the Pirellis.

Their 1.6 Golf was as quick in the wet on Goodyears as the big Vauxhall on PZeros! :o

Think the Eagles were a few quid more (they're about £90 from mytyres.co.uk) but for wet weather ie 8 months of the year you get what you pay for.

Bridgestones S-03s were a close second and they didn't test Toyos unfortunately but I'd say they are the best for around £70.

You pays your money......

Can't remember. I was too pikey too actually buy the mag. :P

Might do now though. Just found their test from a couple of years ago in my archives (don't get called anorak for nothin') and the PZeros blew everthing else away in the dry. 1.8 Mondeo was quicker than an M3 on Contis.

Really depends if you're after ultimate wet or dry performance. (2 sets would be nice - but the missis would kill me)
