Valver 0
GuysI have an AAA 2.8 VR6 engine on coilpack out of a Passat. Now I'm not sure if it's OBD1 or 2 so if anyone can confirm that would be great. It should be 174bhp as standard but I want to know if I can just plug the later Highline ECU as the 2.8s with these are all higher power?.......is it that simple?...
binliner 0
the easiest way to tell if its OBD1 or 2 is the throttle body. The OBD2 ones are electronic and have a black plastic side on the air box side.
binliner 0
On the subject of OBD1 v OBD2... its all later cars (not just highlines) that are supposed to have a bit more power as standard (but VW figures were 174bhp for all 2.8 12v)and I dont think its possible to just swap the ECU
andy 0
its not possible, all obd1 drivers would simply swap the ecu for an instant power mod if that were the case, there's not much between the two anyhow
Valver 0
Are some just stronger than others then?.....it's just that I see that six_appeals is pushing 205bhp/190lbft without the Schrick which is bloody stonking power out of a standard VR!!!
andy 0
induction kit, good exhaust system and chip will get you in that ball park I think, obviously you do get good ones and bad ones though, 205bhp is stonking though I agree
mark@vagworx 0
Some engines are just put together better and make more power, weird but true.
acf8181 0
you don't say what year passat you got the engine from...the changeover was in mid '95 on golfs, i presume it was the same on passats.the only way to switch to obd2 would be to change all the loom and anciliaries.not worth it when the power difference is negligeable.oh, and highlines don't have ecu's that are any different to any mid '95 on vr6. Simons is a good example so is dublokes (which is a 210bhp obd1!) but on that rr day I think the average figure was about 195bhp so the temp played a part in those figures being so high

So had exhaust and Ram Air when that figure was produced, which I seem to find the most powerful combination on the rollers (maybe not on the open road with the bonnet down with the Ram Air though?)Unfotunately its not just a case of swopping the ecu's as the guys have already stated, best thing to do is see if its a OBD1 or 2 first and go from there.
