shail 0
Ive been off the road for about 4 months. Buses and trains are getting me down. Its taking me 1.5 hours to travel 7 miles to work (bus-train-bus). I want my VR6 back. Cars going into Stealth Racing on friday to sort out the very expensive sounding noises from that very expensive V6 under the bonnet. I dont know how much its going to cost, but right now I really dont care. I dont know how much longer i can take it. Just needed to get that off my chest. Admin - can we have a 'Im deppressed cos my VR6 is big-time broken' section. It could be like a group therapy thing.
tommy 0
Admin - can we have a 'Im deppressed cos my VR6 is big-time broken' section. acf8181 0
if its only 7 miles why don't you cycle...will take like 20-30mins.
VRmonster 1
i know what your saying about missing your VR, i havent driven mine for a month, he he. but now i have a nice little mk2, and im seriously thinking about turboing the vr, then dropping it into the mk2, if only it wasnt a work car. VR6Steve 0
Hope it does not work out to be too expensive. Is it the timing chains?
shail 0
VR6Steve, its not the timing chains. Sounds like bottom end bearing knocking (quite a lot) on cyl 1 or 2, and also the day i moved the car to park it up on my dads drive, i got a top end metal-on-metal sound (valve spring??) from cyl 1 or 2. Its not moved since as you can imagine. Stealth say they will look at it and slowly explore with running updates to me, rather than just strip it and rebuild. Fingers crossed it aint too bad, but i know im kidding myself. I would sell it as 'engine problems', but i'd lose SOOOO much cash on it. I think it will work out cheaper to repair (just). VR6Rob 0
sounds like my old engin big end bering on cyl 1 had spun in the con rod allowing the piston to hit the head.
shail 0
How much work was involved to fix it VR6Rob? You say 'old engine' which suggests you got a new engine?Ive dropped mine off at a garage who are currently having a look at it.
VR6Rob 0
Would have needed a new/reground crank, con-rod plus all the other bits needed for a rebuild.Midland VW looked at it and at the time had a good 2.9 engin they fitted insted of repairing the old one. shail 0
Well its terminal. Steath say new engine + other bits. It all comes to £3000!!!! OMG! Dunno what to do. I might sell it with major engine problems - but again dont know what i'd get for it (98R, standard VR6).
acf8181 0
you can buy a whole new vr6 for £3k remember

If so repair it and keep it. If not, you might be better off cutting your losses. What about a second hand lump? Might that be cheaper? Should be able to pick one up for £6-800 + fitting. What spec is your car?
shail 0
I do like the car, but really just want to cut my (substantial) loses on it. Its a 97R/silver/standard except a BMC filter.Second hand engine - just think its a bit risky buying one, but it looks like the cheapest option. If i sell it i'll get hardly any cash back. Dilema.So...i'm on the look out for a used engine, possibly.Any ideas on how much its worth in its current state? Rest of the car is ok.
Nerih 0
without the engine its just a mk3 . I would have to say less than £700 quid....
VR6Steve 0
Have you asked Stealth about finding you a 2nd hand engine. They probably will not guarantee it or the work, but its gotta be worth asking?Try the classifieds on PVW etc and specialist breakers. You can usually find a good list of breakers in VWM.I think Nerih is about right with his valuation. If you do just want to get shot, let me know, I might be interested. shail 0
I'm calling stealth today about sourcing a 2nd hand engine. I'll let you know VR6steve if i decide to get rid of it.
mk3anni 0
How on earth has the engine bene damaged on such a late car???Got me worried about mine now.
shail 0
How on earth has the engine bene damaged on such a late car???Got me worried about mine now.Oil, Oil, Oil. Check your oil every week without fail. Top up oil without fail. Change oil as often as you can. Be carefull not to let foreign objects into the engine when changing oil. If you hear a rattle/tapping/knocking from your engine. Stop the car and get it professionally checked out - if i'd done that i might have been able to get mine repaired.BTW i did all of the above - must have been previous owner. So, let this be a lesson to all of you. After all, the only thing between 2 bits of metal which are moving at 6500rpm in your engine is oil. The importance of stuff for your car goes like this:1st.oil, 2nd. water, 3rd.tyres/brakes, 4th.petrol.......85th.sub woofer........98th.neons.......146th. cup holder............. mk3anni 0
Previous owner it seems didn;t look after mine very well either.I checked the oil on mine recently (2 weeks after buying it) and it was well below what it should have been, and i mean WELL below. No nasty sounds, but oil is black, so i'll be changing it this weekend and probably every 3k. Don't fancy a new engine just yet.
shail 0
mk3anni -I wouldn't be overly worried about that sort of oil consumption on a VR. Seeing as its a new toy you've probably been drivin it like a loon (no?) which burns oil. It'll settle down once your right foot does! Its not uncommon to have to top up oil every 1-2 weeks. You;ll prob find the new oil will do black quick as well - but seeing as you'll change it every 3k(someone correct me) dont be tempted to put in some of that engine cleaner additive between oil changes to clean the internal - as i have heard it may cause yo umore probs than its worth[ Edited Fri Oct 01 2004, 12:59PM ]
mk3anni 0
I have indeed been giving it some stick. Gonna have the car checked over at stealth sooner or later, prob book it in while i'm there for the RR day.
Eat this 2
vw say 1 litre of oil consumption every 1k miles is within tolerance!!!! the dif between min and max on dipstick is also 1 litre mine uses around half a litre every 2.5-3k (iv done 8k now sometimes steady sometimes quick hehe) i get oil and filter change every 3-3.5k NEVER EVER plant my right foot or rev past 3.5k rpm b4 the water temp needle has moved a bit(not necasarilly to midpoint(90degrees) and rarely take the engine past 6k even when i am makin progress unless im racin som1 which isnt to often btw i hav very little history with the car but feel happy its not been abused exept for the wheels doh
VR6Steve 0
Get a second hand engine and carry on enjiying the car. :-)
