Geastb 0
Got a bit of a strange problem. When starting from cold i get no smoke unless i rev it. (slight blue smoke). When driving along steadily and I come to a stop/slow down - then drive off/speed up again i sometimes get a cloud of blue smoke behind me (but not all the time) - but it seems worse when coming up to roundabouts. Its almost as if the oil is building up some where then being burnt iykwim! Is this rings, stem seals, knackered engine? I think my head gasket has gone - would this cause this problem? I use about a litre of oil every 500-600 miles as well!I've got another engine to replace mine - but if its not an expensive fault i'd rather fix my odb1 engine rather than have to fit the odb2 engine i've just bought! acf8181 0
h/g gives white smoke. could be any o fht eother things you've mentioned...i'm not sure how to diagnose which it is, but i'd be thinkin about changin the engine, as if one of those things is gone it may well mean theres a fair few other things about to wear out. Geastb 0
My engine has done 146,000 and the 1 i've bought has done (so im told) 60,000 so hopefully it'll be ok! How can i tel if the engine has done 60,000 or 160,000 - anything i should look for?
kobi 0
Blue smoke = Piston rings. My dad used to be a mechanic and every time we went along to check a car out (when purchasing) he would always look for the obvious sign of wear - Blue smoke from the rear when revving or starting up.Basically get the smokey engine checked but i would say its more or less facked. That would also explain the use of oil, although i understand VR6 engines are naturally juicy?
kobi 0
In terms of the checking the mileage of your new engine i honestly dont know. Although (and this is a long shot) You could get the engine number (vin) and take that to your local dealership and if the car was serviced regularly then they would have records of where it was serviced etc. I have invoices from VW at home and they state my vehicle Registration and Engine number on all invoices, so they must keep a record?... acf8181 0
mileage isn't stored on the ecu on these is it?to be honest, i think your engines kind of worn out (or in need of a full rebuild) at that mileage GeastB, i'd pop the new one in.
kobi 0
Andy i dont think the mileage is stored in the ECU but what i mean is the dealer may have records for the mileage of the engine when they service it.
tandino 1
Blue smoke on the overun doesnt neccesarily mean piston rings - more likely that it is valve guides/stem seals.Blue smoke under hard acceleration would more than likely be rings......Sounds like you have possibly a knackered top end more than anything else.As for the other engine you have - is it still in the car?? - wet and dry compression tests will give you some kind of idea how good it is - other than that it might pay to remove the head to get a look at the bores, valve guides, head casting itself before fitting to the car...Ive fitted a supposed low mileage specialist company supplied gearbox to my Saab previously and it was shot to bits - the most youll get is a replacement but this doesnt cover labour and all fluids you spend out for - get it right first time!!Pete.[ Edited Fri Jun 25 2004, 07:14PM ]
FishWick 21
Have a look at plugs 1 and 6, if they're oiled up the bores have ovalised.
