Okay so a lot of you will probably know the car and have seen it it on the cover of Golf+ a couple of years ago. I bought it at the start of this year from an Edition38 crew member with the intentions of keeping it how it was and showing it, but unfortunately the car wasn't half of what it was talked up to be, being a typical "show car" nice on the outside not so pretty underneath.
Anyway here's a few photos since ownership at a few of the shows We have made it too this year:
    Coombe action day:

    Ultimate dubs:

    Players classic:

    Edition 38:

Since owning the car I have thrown a fair old whack at it finishing bits off and spent hundreds of hours on it already, incuding re lacquering the roof, adding anniversary and R32 detailing inside, replacing anything that was damaged or missing with new parts from TPS, sorting out the all the shocking wiring, fitting Airlift V2 suspension etc etc.
Anyway I was never 100% happy with the car even after doing all this "rectification" so at the end of this season I decided to go balls deep and do a full rebuild, as it's the only way I will be 100% happy with it.
With show season coming to an end Firstly I removed the wheels and slapped a set of standard VR6 alloys on as it was going to be used as my daily for a couple of days.

Then I started on the interior, removing all the ABC pillars, Seats, and all other Trim and panels and putting them safely in storage in the spare room, much to my old mans discust!

Then a few days later all the rest came out, everything is gone apart from the Dash now, that will be out in due course too to make things easier in the coming months.

With the interior almost gutted I could start prodding around the floorpan to see what tinworm we will be dealing with. Unfortunately there was a generous layer of tar sound proofing all over the rear footwells, and when building my Daily this was a key contributor to Rust, so I donned the hammer and chisel and some hours later was back to just metal!

And the almost finished result, will be bare metalled soon. As you can see two of rear bungs have rotten away and will need cutting out, but the others were showing signs of surface rust so to avoid it ever happening again every one will be cut out, replaced with a repair panel and finished so you wouldn't know there was ever any there

Needing a well earned break from scraping, and eager to see the condition of what lies beneath i made space in the garage and took the front end off, and started to move things about in the engine bay to get my head around it all.

Then a few goodies arrived from Germany. a rather "rare" front lip and a Left RSR Hella as my set wasn't perfect. I was like a kid at Christmas opening this package!

Oh and look what else has just turned up .... #becauseracecar is all I'm saying at the moment

It's been a Busy few weeks for me at work, but I've been getting the hours in on the car when I can, gathering information from various sources for the build and trying to hunt down obselete parts seems to be the time killer at the moment!
Last week the engine Came out leaving a rather sorry for itself Two tone engine bay

And one very ugly and neglected 12v engine and gearbox, soon to be given a new lease of life

The engine bay piled with all the oem crap That will be ditched or hidden:

And then all the crap removed and given the stern finger:

Mild steel exhaust system on a vr6?

With the engine on the floor and everything accounted for and boxed and labelled Up I moved onto removing the dash, heater box and steering column from the car. After removing the column I noticed the bottom half is welded to the mk3 pedal box, as it's running a mk4 column. I am going to have to fabricate a lower column mount in replacement of the pedal box because this is being ditched. Still in two minds as to fit EPAS or not.
The dashboard removed and also heater box. spaghetti junction awaits behind!

Then I got out the diagram for the CEL2 fuse box, working through the looms on the inside of the car labelling every one and removing which ones I will not need to tidy things up, and left what I do need in a orderly pile in the passenger footwell

The old man was nagging me as he couldn't use the ramp, so we found new Temp wheels for the car and test fitted them, needs a tad more camber to tuck fully on the rear.

a few days later armed with a grinder saftey glasses and a good covering of clothing I set about de studding the engine bay, removing all the securing tabs and grinding flush. Forgot to wear ear plugs and could hear church bells for 24 hours after!

    http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y480/aaron1492/null_zps60d64ba0.jpg
Then I went on to removing all of the seam sealer from the joins in the engine bay, some areas had to be almost half an Inch thick! Behind the turrets was near impossible to reach, but a heat gun and long screwdriver did the trick

grinding disks don't last atall at over a pound each!
    http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y480/aaron1492/null_zps859ba9ab.jpg
With the bay making such good progress and metal sourced from friends for a rollover jig the old man and myself fabricated one up today using the original mk3 bumper support bars as we're lazy, works surprisingly well!

Picked up some goodies from kent on Thursday too, struck a bargain with a guy that races for team hard and had a round in the BTCC this year. Just need to get my Red interior sold now!
