Thought i'd do a pre-holiday check, pulled the dipstick out, wiped it dry, replaced it then pulled it out and it was still dry. OMG where did that go? I only filled it before xmas.

Bosch FGR8KQE I paid £27 +VAT for a set four years ago. They been in ever since without a problem.

Initially I went to Toolstation thinking that the £13.75 Flaring tool kit was a bargain. I was very wrong. Almost impossible to do anything with it and then it fell apart after three attempts - so I took it straight back and got a refund. I bought from Amazon a Draper Expert Hand Held Brake Pipe Flaring Tool which is specifically designed for 3/16" pipe. Brilliant! Well worth Forty summat quid. Perfect flare every time and you can use it in situ. Also bought a Laser Brake Pipe Bender and an Am-Teck pipe cutter. spent about £70 altogether. The Tools made the job well easy, wish I'd though

The VR passed on the retest after I quizzed him on this, but he put them down as Advisories. He still insisted that there was too much free play and it was borderline - it was jacked up and molested with a pry-bar. I won't be going back to that garage.

Ta-daa - all done, what a day though. Treated myself to a Pipe Flaring tool, pipe bender & pipe cutter, a roll of copper pipe, a litre of DOT4 and a handful of 10mm unions. (I had to drive back to GSF after realising I needed just one 12mm union) NB: Both 10mm and 12mm unions are needed. Had to replace both rear pipes as well as the main F2R pipes. Started at 8am - finished a 4pm. It pissed it down all day The VR was up on chunks of Railway sleepers - so just enough room for me to roll under the car.

Grinding to a halt

At first I thought it was a brake problem, like I said - right hand lock over slight bump - thought maybe an airbubble in the flexy. but now I'm thinking it could be the abs or traction control, sometimes it does it without using the brakes, and sometimes if you gun it when roads are wet its like the traction control slips slightly. The ABS light comes on at start up and goes out as normal. -
I have had exactly this with my recent MOT, They tester is a new lad who has taken over from the old guy I have been going to for years. I renewed the strut mounts and bearings last year, everything is super tight, its only done a couple of G's on the clock. Just wasted a day taking it all apart to find nowt wrong, and just read the above.

The engine sounds fine at tickover, give it a few revs and i'm getting like a ... "shhkrrrk shhkrrrk shhhkrrrk" from around the camchain area. Runs fine, pulls strong. Recently fitted brand new chain tensioner guides, but thinking worn chain, or tensioner bolt.

140k on my Highline. My last mk3 gti lived to 195k then I sold it.

The VR has started with an intermittent weirdness with the ABS. Braking works fine under 99% of braking conditions, but now and then grinds to a halt with a graunchy noise when braking softly, especially under right hand full lock - say turning into a carpark or summat. I can't see owt obviously loose or worn. any ideas?

Hi, just an update for you. After doing the head gasket and still finding a small leak I chucked in a bottle of K-Seal to the coolant. Does what it says on side ot' tin. Tenner well spent.

Up and running in time to go to Glastonbury. I gave it a quick wash/T-cut/polish just before the sandy desert rain ruined it. I'll wash it again next year!

Yes did the sequence, I even marked each bolt with a blob of paint so I got the correct 90degrees. It's not a bad leak so I'm not gonna worry for the minute. At least now though I know what to do.

I have my sills to look at fixing soon. I had an interesting experience of the driveshaft bolts shearing off when I powered away from Morrisons leaving me motionless in the middle of a roundabout with a horrid graunching noise (this is because I forgot to Loctite the bolts when I did the suspension). After pushing the VR to the side of the road I went to jack up the car with the horrid thing that sits in the spazzy tyre in the boot. "Crunch" went the sill like it was made of Digestives!

I torqued the head in sequence 1: 33ft/lb, 2: 40ft/lb, 3: 90 degrees, 4: 90 degrees. Then after finding steam escaping after said airlock incident I tightened them up another 45 degrees. I'm scared of over tightening them if I go again. The gasket I used was a Danish version. Maybe it was false economy. You live and learn!

Update after a couple of weeks of driving. The engine runs smooth, quiet and pulls strong. Better for having the valves re-cut. The replacement aux water pump actually works and does its ten minute cut-off cycle. Sadly though, there is a very slight coolant seepage from the belt side of the head gasket I may have cooked it slightly when I first started it up - I added the coolant via the expansion tank which created an air lock. I think the pressure may have initially buggered the gasket. Either that or the block isn't flat. The head was skimmed so that should be ok. I refilled the coolant v

Hoof ukin ray! after five months of headache, scuffed knuckles, blown budget, problems - more problems, breaks, leaks, arguments, stress, the VR is back together. Took her for test drive today, all is well, (may have to get a jubilee clip rather than a spring clip on one hose).

Grrr, I've just lost £15 of G12 down the drive because of crack pipe issues. Really getting to the end of my tether. Started by snapping the plastic tube that leads to the oil cooler, so ordered new plastic crack pipe off of ebay. Managed to split two O rings trying to fit it into engine block. Tried wet n dry around the the housing to remove any sharp bits, tried smidgion of copper grease, then tried drop of fairy liquid, still split further two O rings that I had spare. eventually got my last remaing O ring to fit in. put everything back together but it started to drip after adding coolant.

Bought correct gasket from GSF. The ebay chap refunded me the price of the gasket.
