  1. I've got a toy 205 GTi in the garage now for trackdays and clearing the cobwebs at weekends. It's got the 160bhp Mi16 engine conversion, almost no suspension, completely stripped interior with roll cage and bucket seats and a set of spare racing slicks so I can go Ferrari baiting! (Well that's the plan ha ha). Still haven't decided how to replace the Golf as a daily car, anything with less than 250bhp feels a bit lame! Tempted by 406 Coupes and Alfa GTVs at the moment - although that could change by tomorrow!
  2. The depreciation proof car eh Toby? (If you don't count maintenance - and who does apart from the wife!) I nearly offered to buy it back off you! Then remembered / was reminded that I probably used it less than you did. Sure it'll be cherished by its new keeper though. (I need to stop posting on this forum, perhaps start up an exVR6OC?)
  3. How about this for an outrageous claim; 1.9 Pug 205 (admittedly stripped, lowered on race slicks and with the 160bhp Mi16 engine) being quicker round a track than a Nissan 350Z and hassling a Lambourghini Gallardo!!! I've bought it as a toy so I'll be able to substantiate (or not) the claim.
  4. matth76; Try this link http://www.race-technology.com/Site1_UK/acatalog/Performance_Meters.html The AP22 performance meter just sticks to your dash with bluetac, runs of a battery and is quite easy to use. You don't need to enter any data to get acceleration figures but if you want to calculate wheel power there's a bit more to it. It's all explained in the instruction manual though and if I can figure it out, anyone can! I've read a comparison review in one of the Max Tits type mags (accidentally caught my eye once ) and it proved to be the most accurate for the money. As I said, within 2
  5. Nerih; 14.1 quarter mile with 102mph terminal (on the run against your good self) 0-60 in 5.7, 0-100 in 13.5. As already mentioned the LetsTorqueBHP calculator is flattering (although I've found if you add the weight of a driver - and let's face it most acceleration tests involve one - it's pretty close). Matth76; Race Technology Performance meter. Not what you'd call cheap at
  6. Eat this: The drag strip 1/4 mile time comes out at 14.74 though with your car. (Allows for grippier surface). Pretty close to what you actually did, no? Although it gives 5.2 0-60 and 13.2 1/4 times for my (old) Golf. I didn't get near those. Could've been the driver!
  7. This gives you a good idea (maybe a touch optimistic) http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp Toby's Mk2 VR weighed the same with a bootful of subs & amps and did 0-60 in 6.8 when I owned it.
  8. Glad you're pleased with the car Ade. If you need to know anything obviously drop me a line, I'll help if I can mate. I'm out looking for an insurable replacement this weekend (can't live with the 406 estate!) but everything feels as though the handbrake has been left on! S'pose I'll get used to having less than 300 ponies eventually! A big thank you to everyone in VR6OC who has helped me out with advice and even practical assistance over the last year (esp. Claire, Tommy and Pete). The club has made VR ownership and maintenance a much less painful experience and everyone I've spoken to has
  9. Nerih, 5000rpm sounds quite high for peak torque. Mines at about 4k and standard is 4200 I think. As far as moving the torque peak up the rev range goes that's what everyone after more power wants. 260lbft at 6500rpm would give you 310bhp. Have you posted your graphs - be interesting to compare.
  10. I imagine a VR6 Golf with 190bhp would have virtually identical performance to a VR6 Corrado (60 in around 6.5, 100 in 17.5). More or less the same as a 328 then. So early OBD1 Golfs are probably very slightly down on performance compared to the BMW whereas later VWs are just as quick if not quicker. Agreed? TVR6 - no sweat mate. I like to challenge the old memory bank now and then. And Autocar's figures are usually about the quickest of any mag for some reason (brutal road testers?). Might be buying a cheap 328 - hence the interest in this thread. If I do I'll let you know what it does usin
  11. They should work out how much of your policy is left and give you a refund worked out on a daily rate, less a
  12. Thought that Elephant allowed up to six "not to extreme" mods (chip, wheels, suspension, exhaust etc). They wouldn't cover me with a 'charger, same as Nerih. You can play around with quotes online ticking different mods to see what difference they make
  13. Then quarter miles in the 13's instead of 16's eh? 8)
  14. Have a look here: http://www.racelogic.co.uk Works in any gear at any speed. Far too complex for me to explain how though!! The Racelogic system is a power cut one, but very unobtrusive on dry (5% slip) setting. You don't really know it's there but you can use full throttle on a roundabout without needing to buy new alloys (or worse!). As long as you move the steering wheel yourself of course - it won't do that for you. Basically it makes the most of what grip you have, whereas a lsd or sticky tyres actually give you more grip (but don't always tell you when the grip has gone). As previousl
  15. Never tried a VR Golf without a Quaife in anger so can't comment on their effectiveness (but Kevhaywire has already - so take it as read they do what it says on the tin!) As for the Racelogic traction control, I'd definately recommend it. It allows you to not have to worry about wheelspin (wet or dry roads) and all but eliminates understeer (although I admit my suspension and arbs help with that too). At
  16. I've never bothered but it can't do any harm. More cold air the better.
  17. Keep an eye on the oil temperature. It gets very hot very quickly if you haven't got a cooler. I saw 146 degrees C once on my Corrado! Eased off a bit after that. Never missed a bit though and I did half a dozen trackdays in it with the temp. regularly hitting over 130. Brakes will fade if you punish them (assuming they're standard). I'd say try to limit yourself to 10 - 15 minute stints instead of the full 20 if it's sessioned. Surprising how knackering 20 minutes of believing you're Alonso can be! And I've always put an extra 3 or 4 psi in the front tyres to start with although once hot it
  18. Don't shoot the messenger buddy! I was quoting (from an ageing memory) Autocar test figures. Got the 0-60 times spot on too! So' date=' just for the record; Autocar road test - BMW 328i - 30th August 1995 Power - 193bhp Torque - 206lb/ft 0-60mph - 6.4 seconds 0-100mph - 17.4 seconds 50-70mph in top gear - 9.1 seconds Autocar road test - VW Golf VR6 (3 door) - 6th November 1991 Power - 174bhp Torque - 173lb/ft 0-60mph - 7.1 seconds 0-100mph - 18.7 seconds 50-70mph in top gear - 9.3 seconds The Golf road test was actually a twin test with the BMW 325i with the Go
  19. Apologies - Autocar printed test weights, not VW. Think they include all fluids and half a tank of fuel (like most cars tend to be on the road with). They quote 1240kg for the Corrado VR6 and I weighed mine at 1210 with almost no fuel so that wasn't far out. I'd imagine anywhere between 1150 and 1200kg dry weight for a 3 door Golf is a realistic figure.
  20. 3 door 1220kg, 5 door 1250kg (VW data). Kerb weights.
  21. The E36 328 is slightly quicker than a VR6, but only slightly. (0-60 in 6.4, 0-100 in 17 compared to 7.1 and 18.5). 328 has 193bhp & 206lb/ft (VR 174 & 170) but the BM weighs about 100kg more than the Golf. Really depends whether you prefer front or rear wheel drive. I've read that the E36 328 was the best 3 series BMW ever produced (not that I'd talk you out of getting a VR!! ) Both cracking cars though - can't go wrong with either.
  22. Not sure about stability on a standard VR but they certainly aren't restricted to 130mph. Autocar averaged 139mph around the Millbrook bowl back in 1991 which equates to about 142mph on the flat. Speedometers will always over-read too so 150 on the clock isn't impossible.

    Track days??

Hmmmm.. Trackdays kill tyres and brakes, quarter miles clutch and (occasionally) transmission. (From someone who's done a driveshaft on the 1/4 and lots of brake pads, discs and rubber on track). Trackdays are much more fun (and expensive).
  24. Fair result, although the guy in court before me got away with a
  25. You really thinking of selling the Mk2 Toby?? If mine sells this weekend you'll have to let me know what you want for it if you are! Can't remember exactly what I sold it to you for. The Missis would kill me if I bought it back, but hey - life is short! Have you limited the mileage on your classic policy? Will they cover a convict like me? (Banned for 4 weeks) !shy
