  1. I know most of you wouldnt dream of having an auto box but with the amount of commuting i do it is great. One problem though, the gear change seems to be getting quite harsh when changing up and down top gear. Especially when i floor it and hit the kickdown. it seems to be quite harsh. Feels kinda like its the mounts but i am not sure. when the torque convertor unlocks my revs shoot right up because of my pedal position, the car slows then there is quite a major jolt. Not the best description but just wanted to know if these auto's have this type of fault
  2. Just got married mate, my car doesnt seem as important to her as her horse bloody does. Women are difficult to understand. (apologies if any women reading this) My Vr has exactly the same symptoms, i am desperately trying to sort out some floor space to do the job myself. Not successful at the mo. x)
  3. snap, i havent quite sussed it either so you are not on your own LOL
  4. corradogang* wrote: how do u skim a head anyway? You have to take it to a company that has a milling machine. they can test it on a true flat surface and confirm if it is warped at all. they then run it under a milling machine and take off as little as possible to ensure a true flat surface, voila all done!! not normally too expensive.
  5. Not at all, i havent checked yet. i just have this concern as i have with most cars that at this kinda a mileage the cam belt needs changing. I appreciate this is chains etc and last alot longer but just didnt want to hear that horrible rattle when I open it up and it all goes bang!! i am sure it was yourself who gave me some advice a while ago about checking them. I will have to look back and see. Is it a fairly simple job to check. I am a mechanic but not experienced on VR's. i have 17 years experience on Challenger Tanks , they have a fairly complicated management system but are not as intr
  6. binliner, thanx 4 that, i have read the thread, kinda clears things up really. cheers
  7. doxer79, If you need some help then I would be happy to assist in the New Year
  8. Can someone please clarify for me the difference between OBD1 & 2. I have a 96P VR, with coil pack etc. Is this the OBD2.
  9. The only noise i have ever had from a heater was the fan bearings going, they squeeled like a stuck pig. That was on my Mk2 Gti though. dont know if the Vr suffers the same type of fault. worth checking. Mick
  10. Chrisbrindley, have you tried Autotechnic in S'ton on the Rushington Ind Estate. i have had work done by them B4. mick
  11. even if i take the head off, am I right in saying that I still cant change the chains etc unless i take the gearbox off?
  12. I assume it is an engine out job. i have an automatic dare i say it (although great for commuting everyday) will this make any difference. is it tricky due to the alignment of the cams, can a tool be purchased for this, if so, do you know where. i am not a lover of VW dealers!!!!!!!!! 13. having done a few head gaskets b4 i am well aware of the type of job but not on this engine. wots involved with this lump, any main probs at all. does the head always need skimming on these lumps??
  14. Not really, little bit lumpy on tickover but hardly noticable. I havent had to replenish any water but it has found its way to the min mark over the last month or so. Do at least 1 hour to work each day ,so not exactly short journey. Can get hold of CO2 tester. will try that, thanks for help. Mick
  15. any ideas of the cost for the work to be done on a head gasket, mine seems a bit iffy!!!!!!!!
  16. I am almost certain that the aux pump is supposed to run on after you have turned off the ignition (mine does). This is to allow your coolant to circulate around the engine to cool it quicker and prevent too much heat soak after switching off!! It certainly shouldnt be draining the header tank though. Are you sure it is at its correct level in first place. If your battery has drained so much, you may have a current drain somewhere else in the electrics possibly not related to this. hope this helps (a little) Mick
  17. I have lost a little coolant over the last month or so(down to minimum)and have seen a little bit of emulsification in the filler cap. i know these can be the signs of the head gasket on its way. Is this common on a VR6 with 75k on the clock. It had a miniscule amount when I bought it 18 months ago and I put it down to the fact that it had been sat for a while and the weather was quite damp at time. After test drive and throughout warrenty it never appeared !!! Any reassurance would be greatfully appreciated.
  18. Bit of a long shot, is there n e one in the salisbury / poole / s'ton area who has done the timing chains b4? I have the skills but lack the experience, knowledge and most of all facilities. The Army only lets me work on Tanks in the hanger, n e way, 2 dirty an environment for my VR LOL. i would prefer to do the job myself with assistance from a local club member who has done it b4. Rather offer some cash your way than to a dealer etc. Not looking at doing it probably till April / May next year cheers :|
  19. thanks for that, i had a couple of misfes / rough running in some damp weather a while back, couldnt find the fault and ran ok once i got going, could have the same problem, cheers!!
  20. stating the obvious, have you checked for any leaks etc around exhaust manifold. possibly oil from intake ducting etc. funnily enough, i have a smell that has appeared on mine lately, only notice it on tickover coming thro vents. kinds fuelish but not quite!!!!!! n e ideas also please!!! have checked all around fuel regulator , fuel vap canister etc
  21. 2 questions please!!!!! mine is on 75k should i be thinking about changing the chain, it rattles a bit when cold but i put that down to oil etc. 2nd question but not wanting to digress too far from the topic, wots difference between obd 1 & 2
  22. here is the details of the book I have: Bentley Publishers ISBN 0-8376-0366-8. its a big book covering 93 to early 99 especially the VR6 engine. It is a good buy. I am sure i got it off amazon!!
  23. i have an excellent manual i bought off Amazon, will confirm what it is called and let you know, at work at mo! It is by an american author and relates alot to american spec Golfs in general but most of it is useful. covers the Golf range with emphasis on the VR6.
  24. Apologies for my ignorance. I am a timed served mechanic 17 years but specialise in Battle Tanks as I am in the Army. My experience sadly hasnt got as far as playing with this engine yet. Also unfortunate is that I am unable to use our facilities to work on own cars. Wots this army coming too!!!! You refer to the runners??????, more confusingly the top blade runner. I am not thick , honest, just havent looked into the set up yet. i hate to spend money getting the job done when I have the skills to do it myself but annoyingly not the facilities. Thanks for the advice. Anyone want a go on a tank
