Parts List for timing chains
mickelson replied to mickelson's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
i suppose if the chain has worn or loosened then there is the possibility of loosing some power (minimal). Thats how alot of modern day cars work with variable valve timing, by altering the belt tension slightly. I wouldnt have thought it would be noticable straight away, it wouldnt be a sudden thing -
I would second that, my VR at the moment has an oil leak coming from the base of the air intake pipe where some of the oil collects, this drips onto the exhaust and gives a similar smell. run your hand under the intake pipe toward the breather and see if you get oil on your finger, it may not be obvious at first until you touch underneath.

wayne wrote : It will start, but it just seems like the battery is flat and it takes a bit of cranking. Chances are that if it cranks then it most likely isnt the starter motor, unless the starter motor is the cause of a short circuit and is subsequently draining the battery!! Get the battery checked mate, sounds like a safe bet to me, if the terminals aren't secure then that could cause the problem too.

cheers for your advice. Mick

one the best way to confirm if your battery is flat / poor, is to turn on your headlights and then crank your engine. The lights will probably dim very slightly with a good battery but they certainly shouldn't almost go out. If they do then I would look at the state of your battery (possible poor connection), even new ones can be duff. The only real way to confirm if the alternator is knackered is to connect a voltmeter to your battery. it should read around 12volts before cranking, drop slightly between 9 - 11 volts on cranking then pick up to around 12 -14v (on some vehicles) when charging.

I thought the lazy sods were only at my local GSF. LOL -
what parts list is it? The only rotor I can think of is the ABS ones on the back of the hubs!! that said, alot of impulse rotors are used as timing marks for things like hall senders, Crank / Cam shaft position sensors and the like. dont know if its n e help. Mick

Exhaust? Was goin for powerflow...maybe not
mickelson replied to MarkGolf's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
So do I gather from what most people have said that Powerflow good but are generally loud (boy racer loud!!!) I want an exhaust that allows for the growl of a VR6 but doesnt draw attention. Last thing I want at 34 is people pointing and shouting Co*K!! LOL. Whats the general concensus? Its alot to pay out for and regret afterwards!!!!! -
not exactly a quick job though was it? did you have to do any ECU stuff, surely just disconnecting the 'box ecu would have been ok wouldn't it??
-
not quite LOL, east where? what country is that in????

what makes it so difficult to align then on the top end? is it cus of wear on the sprockets mixed with a new chain? does the timing tool that you pyt between the cams not hold it in place enough??? -

-
is this be the general concensus from other vr owners???
-
oh no!! mine is on 74 at the mo. do they defo need a rebuild then at that mileage??? have you had n e probs with yours??
-
also, what parts should i be getting b4 the job, ie timing chains etc
-
is it a ball ache with aircon then?? what time frame am i looking at to get the lump out leaving my auto box in situ
-
My Bentley manual states that the front bumper and slam panel etc has to be removed when lifting out the engine / gearbox. 2 questions: is this necessary as it adds to the amount of work; is it easier to lift the engine leaving the 'box in situ? Looking at doing the chains and sadly the head gasket shortly!!!!!!
