Russ_vr6 12
right remember i said i thought my head gasket was goin, then i found my coolant temp sensor/thermostat housing was leaking??well today i got all the bits from work and i fitted a new housing, seals and thermostatnow so far car is running really nice,BUT water temp wont rise over 70 degrees when driving?normally she runs at 80 which is jus under half way,now she sits at a quarter?im gonna check for an air lock in the morning, jus wondering everybodys opinions on this?bearing in mind i lost a lot of coolant so air lock is my first idea(n.b. anybody with head gasket simptoms check ur housing!! its hard to see if its leaking,i had to pressure test my system and leave it idling for ages before i saw a drip)
spindat45 0
HiIt could be a silght air lock m8. how long did you run it with the cap off and heating on for? from my limited knowledge of VR's the temp gauges sit at half way (12 o'clock) unless a non standard thermostat is fitted or one that opens at a lower temperature. another possiblity is the temp sender.Kevin
Russ_vr6 12
well temp sender is new so cant be that mateythermostat is std vw 80 degree, same as the 1 that came out,and all the bits are genuine as i work for vwif u leave it running the temp gauage goes up like usual, fan cuts in like ususal, but when driving it doesnt go above 70?it always used to run between 1/4 and half way (around 80 degrees on the guage) jus seems bit wierd
dellert 0
Mine did that before i changed my stat, used to just sit at 70 and in the winter time there was no heat from the matrix, put a new stat on and all better. Did you put the stat in the right way up? I know it sounds dumb, but apparently it is possible and people have done it! Dunno what sort of result it would give?

Is the method mentioned ...how long did you run it with the cap off and heating on for? ... the standard procedure??Thanks,Steve
Russ_vr6 12
im my opinion mate i run it up from cold with the cap on for a while, then put cap on,run so fans come on and off about 3 times, leave to cool down, check level(it will prob need a bit of water by now)that did it for mine mate
Big J 283
hi matedont worry about this at all, i have exactly the same with mine. i spoke to tim at the phirm and he said its nothing to worry about, seems healthy enough. if he said that, then thats good enough for me. it never overheats and never runs cold either. just doesnt run as warm as my 1800 SE did, but apparantly thats a VR thing.
