My vr 1 scooby 1

Recommended Posts

had a good race with a scooby this mornin, looked std with gold wheels, old shape but saw the series mcrae badge on the boot(anybody know what these got over normal models?)

he overtook few cars bit silly,so i shot down some bk roads and met him on the local private land lol and we both went for it 2nd gear he pulled tiny bit with the turbo coming on boost but then there was no difference,at once we got into 4th i slowly started to close the gap, came up beside him at the end and he went from laughin at the golf to lookin not happy lol

i dont think i could have passed him nut i was happy i kept up :)

it was a turbo mate,i know mre cars pretty well, the bonnet vent, twin tail pipes and the fact that i didnt gain said it was a turbo ;)

i used to own a prodrive fettled scooby few years ago, great cars if u lauch really hard, but as u can imagine doin that every day isnt gonna make it last long lol, quick but not amazing when on the move

i looked at turbo replica's mate with bonnet vents and twin tailpipes doesn't mean it was a turbo??

in the end i neever bought one as i would be a wanabee proper scoob owner so i bought the vr for the cheap insurance and fuel economy in the end ;)

The lower power turbo scoobs (i.e. < wrx on early cars, and non Sti later ones) are pretty quick but soo low geared, that they start to run outta puff when you get near autobahn speeds so I'm not surprise you started to gain in 4th.

Scoobs are very quick of the mark mind

Russ, what mods (if any) to your VR (mark3 golf I assume?)

Nice one keeping up with it. I have no doubt it was the turbo you raced. I was actually going to buy one before I got my VR. I looked at the classic shape (the same as the one you encountered) which has a far better power to weight ratio than the later bug eyed and newer imprezas.

I test drove a standard UK model one (the later classic shape with 215bhp) and I have to say it felt no quicker than my VR (which is lightly modded to around 200bhp). They would be quick off the line due to the 4wd but nothing in it once moving. Although a lightly modded subaru will easily beat the VR...just an exhaust and air filter and remap can take power to 280bhp if not more. I also had a test drive in an impreza type RA (Jap import) light weight model. 0-60 quoted at 4.6 secs... (only with 260bhp) I can tell you that was one fast car! However due to the short gearing only has a top speed of 120!

Not on the classic shape. About 240 after a full system and remap.

The only reason Scoobs give more power with an exhaust is because of the front pipes. The Japs had a gentelman's agreement to cap the power to stop the power struggles. Same with the germans and their 155mph speed limiters.

If you look at a stock scoob front pipe, 30% of the throat is blocked off. Fit a full bore front pipe from Hayward & scott and remap the engine to suit and it's a different engine. Lose one or both of the cats and you get further gains.

Keeping up with a stock WRX is easy, watch out for the modded ones. The WRX 2000 was just a watered down one for the UK market. The Jap spec WRX is stupidly fast but it won't run on 95 unleaded.

If you can hear the turbo whistle clearly, it has full bore front pipes and no cats.

Update lol:

went down weston last night,on the way home got into a lil tussle with a 53 plate clio 172,who thought it was funny to fly past, then slow down then fly past and slow down, and they were tryin to race my mate in her 172,so he flew past me,i gave chase, sat on his bumper for a bit,he didnt like it so went to undertake a car, this car was pulling into the 1st lane as it was so he kept goin onto the hard shoulder!

i slowed down then

Ah Clios.....0-60 rockets, I'll give them that. Get them past 100 though and they just don't have the minerals to keep it going. At 100mph the VR6 has taken it's viagra and is starting to get hard.

You'd be surprised what a minimal advantage 4WD is. it's forte is standing launches, but do 10 of them in a scoob and you can wave goodbye to the cluch.

A few of us did a standing thrash once, me in my then standard Rado VR, mate 1 in his WRX 2000 and mate 2 in his leon cupra R. Scoob boy got the obvious launch advantage but he only pulled half a car length on us....when my VR got to 5000 rpm, it pulled away from both of them..... small turbos and small capacity work against you at the higher rpms ;-)
