matth76 1
HiI'm having Vibratechnic uprated engine mounts fitted to my golf vr6 as I've just had a stainless steel exhaust manifold fitted so want to eliminate engine movement as much as possible. The Phirm are doing the work so it should be in very good hands. They have recommended I only have the gearbox mount and the front mount done. Its not necessary to change the rear one as that doesn't take much load like the other two mounts plus it's right next to the steering column (if it's changed it can cause vibrations through the steering wheel), so I'm just having the two mounts done only and not the rear one.The Phirm are getting back to me with an exact price next week - but mentioned the front mount was around 125 and the gearbox one 90, and it would be a half hour labour to fit (I'm guessing this would be 20). Does this sound about right? Not sure if that includes vat or not though. How will my car drive after having the two new mounts fitted? Will it get smoother after a couple of weeks?Cheers for any helpMatt

matth76 1
Thanks for your reply. Has anyone got uprated Vibratechnic engine mounts (front and gearbox) - how was your car? Did gear changes become easier?
FishWick 21
Yes, a lot smoother and less reluctant. I have Vibratech competition front and their fast road spec at the rear, and a solid rubber gearbox mount, which is from a MK2 Golf diesel. I've also got poweflex front cross member bushes so engine movement is at a minium, which makes the whole car feel a lot more stable mid bend and engine vibration is stock. The only downside is a slight jolt through the car when the engine fires up in the morning because of the stiff front mount and X-member bushes but when it's hot, it's spot on.The front and rear are the most important ones but do get rid of the nasty OE gearbox one as it's complete crap.Save on labour, fitting the mounts is a peice of cake, well, the gearbox one is a chew on but the front and rears are an hour's work. matth76 1
I'm only having the front and gearbox one replaced. I was told the rear one doesn't take too much load and isn't critical to replace - plus it's next to the steering rack in the golf which (if replaced) can cause vibrations through the steering wheel. FishWick 21
Agreed but the Vibra gearbox one does transmit more diff whine into the cabin than the MK2 rubber one.You definitely want to do the front and rear ones together. A standard rear takes too much compression if uprating just the front, the force has to go somewhere. I've seen rear mount bolts bend and eventually snap as a result of just using an uprated front. matth76 1
HiI've just had the 2 new uprated Vibratechnic engine mounts (gearbox and front mounts) fitted to my Golf VR6. I only picked my car up yesterday. I may look into fitting the rear one at some point in the future. Anyway.. I have a question - I find my car tends to judder a tiny bit when I am stationary or on the 'biting point' when in traffic or when I reverse. Tends to happen all the time whether the car is cold or at operating temp. Is this due to the new engine mounts and is this normal when they have been recently fitted? I understand there will be some new vibration present for a couple of weeks until the mounts 'settle' but is what I am experiencing due to the new mounts?I have also had new timing chains fitted too and a new clutch...all work done at The Phirm who are very good. Thanks for any help.CheersMatt
mk3anni 0
Mine did that when i had mine fitted. To some extent they still do.
matth76 1
Do you know if Vibratechnic engine mounts will affect my insurance premium? I haven't told them as it's not a performance / styling mod. It's just to make the engine rock less and be more reliable. Although should I tell them just in case? I'm with Elephant.co.uk (which is the same as Admiral) but only been with them 6 months - so not sure how flexible they are with mods. CheersMatt
mattverth 0
No chance. They could never say they are a performance mod. In fact they must be safer than standard, and they dont make the car more stealable...
VR6Pete 1,455
yep, you will find that with the reduced engine movment you might encounter a "snap" when pulling off and more engine vibrations than with standard mounts, still worth it totally given the improvment it makes
matth76 1
So is the general consensus: don't bother telling my ins. company? I can't see why I should bother, as mounts are mounts... they don't improve the performance, only improve the longevity over standard mounts, all they are is stronger and reduce wear and tear to other engine components. Cheers for any comments.
