hi new here hopeing for some advise ok had my head gasket done about a week and a half ago all seems ok but theres a little hole in the side of the expan tank and my water seems to be coming out theres also no pressure in any of the hoses you can squezze them hot the car is not over heating no white smoke no water in oil or oil in water no bubbles in the expan tank so head gaskets seems 100% now a vw garage has told me its the water pump and it very common problem he said the vains on the water pump have prob broken up no allowing it to work.

thanks any help guys.

right, fill up the the water bottle (and various pipes), have a BIIIG jug of water available, and turn on, LEAVE the expansion cap open (vw shouldve done this for u and checked or leaks when they did ur head gasket!!!), run the car squeezing the top radiator pipe, run for a while, ensure heating works.

then if you have leaks from your expansion bottle, IDENTIFY them and RECTIFY them, there should be no leaks.

a busted water pump will leak, check to see if its leaking, check to see if the pump pully is turning or if its wobbling. vw charge quite a bit for water pump replacement....mine needed changing at 75k (the vains were nearly all broken)

The water pump went on mine, and as Nerih says, I got water leaking out of the little "bypass" hole just underneath it. I also got loud squealing noises.

The little hole at the top of the expansion tank is a pressure relief valve. It's designed to vent steam if the pressure in the coolant system gets too high. Typically this will happen:

1. In an overheat situation

2. When combustion gases are leaking into the coolant system, applying additional pressure (usually the fault of the headgasket)

(2) is very unlikely in your case, since the headgasket has just been replaced!

I'd try replacing the expansion tank anyway, 'cos it's a cheap part and easy to replace yourself.

Replacement water pumps are actually a cheap part (

sorry guy didnt have the gasket done a a main stealer an idependant vw specialist so tolk the pump out today its ok it had a vw pump with plastic veins maybe a upgrade due to the problems with them anyway changed it any way also changed the thermostat only 37 for both parts and fitted my self. there is still a very slight trickle coming out so you reccommend changing the bottle then leaving the cap of and squezze the hose for how long also what is this for to bleed it or something. could the bottle be split on the inside because this should have no leaks at should it.

In the US, the V6 version of the Mk4 had the 12v VR6 engine & 2wd transmission, straight out of the Mk3. The only differences are a different inlet manifold, engine covers & ECU map. This is generally referred to as the "OBD3" VR6 engine, but in reality it's just an OBD2 lump with the above mods.

In Europe, we got the newer 24V engine & 4x4 6 speed transmission instead (Golf 4Motion). This is still a VR6 engine, with 15 degree vee angle, but has a slightly different engine block and a very different cylinder head.

I had similar problem with mine spitting out water from the expansion tank. I replaced the tank and cap, flushed out and refilled with G12+.

I've spoken to a few VR6 owners who have had similar problems, stealers don't seem to have a clue but this cured it.

guess it's an age thing with the VR
