hi guys iv noticed a rattle snake noise under my bonnet...... :(

i first thought it was just the tappets as its not really that loud.

but it doesnt seem to go away as it get warmer.

I seem to hear it most when im pulled up next to a wall and it bounces the sound to me......

What can i do? its sunday now and i need to use the car today to go get some tyres fitted to my new wheels.....

no where will be open today or tomorrow so will be tuesday at the earliest...

is it ok to still use her if i drive sensibly? or will i kill her?

well it could just be the tensioner that keeps it tight or could need a new chain.

what mileage has ur car done??

did the noise just appear all of a sudden or has it gradually louder and louder??

sorry to ruin ur sunday mate but would hold back driving it till u get it checked out!

Sounds like chains to me, your best holding the revs at about 1,200, just blip the throttle a little and let it drop.. if it is the chains it will be heard fromt he gearbox side of the engine, If it can be heard, then i'd advise you to check the condition of your top runners.

mine sounds just how you describe, isolated it to the injectors. each are tapping but with 6 of them sounds like a rattle. I was told that it is not a problem and is fairly common with VR's, would be interested to know if your garage says the same

Been to a local trust worthy garage and he says its deffo chains or tensioner....quoted me 400 to sort it so its booked in for next monday...no E38 for me &|

he advised me to get a new clutch too if its never been replaced....

ah well at least i will know thats one less thing to go wrong....

iv put her in my garage and changer my name to carloss (car less) untill i get her fixed.

Don't automatically assume the worst, there are lots of things that can cause tapping/rattling noises.

It could still be your tappets. What make and grade of oil are you using? If you use an oil that's too thin (e.g. 0w/40) the tappets won't hold pressure when the oil is warm and at it's thinnest.

A mechanic's stethoscope will be useful (they are cheap and available from most motorist's stores). Place the stethoscope on the side of the engine (actually the cam chain cover) underneath the coil pack and see if the noise is loudest there. If it is, then it's likely to be the chains.

If you're having the chains done, definitely get the clutch (including release bearing) done at the same time, as this will save you a load of cash in the long run.

Chain renewal involves removal and separation of the engine & gearbox. Most mechanics quote 6-7 hours.
