It's all personal preference I think.

I second 17's. What I've run on most of my golfs.

But a lot of people do run 16's.

More important than wheels size for handling, is camber, toe in toe out, rolling centre, and wheel centre lines.

I think there et35 and I had to use 20mm spacers on the front as the back of the spokes fowled my calipers. Apparently that's just because of the wheels I have (dare drrs) I also run a slight stretch on my tyres. I run 195/40/17 on the front and 205/40/17 on the back
