vr6 12v variable valve timing

was down looking at my cams today and noticed the cam trigger is different to all the other ones I

have see before

when I checked the part number  and looked on line the trigger I have is described as a phase sender.

 

Trigger for camshaft position sensor
For vehicles with engine number from 260 001 only

Used for variable valve timing.

my engine number is higher than 260 001 so I should have this part fitted

 

can anyone shed any light on why there are so many trigger points on the part

 I can not see the vr6 having variable valve timing without some way of physically rotating the cam in question

The question I would like answered is,

was the 12v vr6 golf ever fitted with this sensor arrangement from factory ?

I did vag com and its got a fault

 

00515 short to ground

checked the wiring all ok

so there must be a fault with the sensor £56for a bosch one ouch

see what happens when it arrives next week

I will let you know

Yes it was fitted but I'm not sure if it was fitted to any uk cars

You can check by which type cam sensor plug you have I think if it's the rectangular one it's the old type

If you have the rounded corner then it's the later type

I'm not hundred percent sure I could be wrong

Up load a pic of the old sensor?

Graph is there with a cam sensor fault so might get bit more

Only problem besides cam sensor is the inlet manifold I have a switch in the car to control it at the moment until I wire in the vafc2 to control it

The torque is insane compared to the 12v

I us d a 4.4kg flywheel which helps in the lower gears

Also I migh be on a winner with getting a new ecu

I have fitted a new sensor after checking the wiring

it still shows a fault

00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
            29-00 - Short to Ground

 

only thing left is the ecu

that is a late vr6 ecu

 

in answer to your question I have changed both and fitted a new bosch cam sensor, and I have an obd1 engine with duplex chains.

 

 The double cam cog accepts the sensor ring perfectly and is lined up exactly the same as on the obd2 cam, I checked

I have used the  obd1 top cam housing and the clearance between the sensor and the sensor ring looks good

so it should all work fine

 

there is no difference between the obd1 and obd2 engine apart from the top timing chain and tensioners chain guide and upper timing cover

I am using the obd2 throttle body, injectors, engine loom, and all obd2 sensors

 

there are 3 other options as I see it

 

the wiring

 

the timing is off

 

the gap between the sensor and sensor wheel

 

 

 

 

 

I am going to check for a fluctuating signal from the sensor ,recheck the wiring,

if that does not work recheck the timing again,

the only other concern

is the gap between the sensor and ring correct any one know what it should be?

will try that,  

before I reset the code with the engine running and when I rescanned it, it came straight back.

 

the engine runs really nice and quiet 

if you stab the throttle it hesitates a little

the only fault showing is the one previously posted

I have similar problem if I hit throttle on idle but from 1k on it snappy

I got the ecu but it has the immobiliser

So once I get someone with vag comm vcds to reprogram the car will let you know.

I did plug it in to try it and it did start, and got a good feeling as it fired up quicker than normal

Meaning it is recognised the new style quick start cam sensor and phase wheel
