I hope someone can help. I'm planning to replace my headgasket and tappets this weekend, but I am lacking VW special tool 3268. It looks like this:

3268camshaft%20ruler%20vr-6.jpg

and is used for holding the camshafts in their TDC positions on reassembly.

My local VW dealer told me that they are not allowed to sell tools (anyone that works for a VW dealer, is this true?) and all the independent tool dealers I've spoken to say they can no longer get it.

Are these tools still available from anywhere in the UK?

If not, does someone have this tool? If so, could they possibly post up the dimensions (including thickness) so that I can have a go at making one up?

Any help greatly appreciated!

This might help it was taken from the VWVORTEX web site it's the post about doing the chains.

(If everything is lined up properly and the engine is at Cyl. #1 TDC, you should be able to slide the camshaft locking tool (VW tool #3268) into the grooves. Instead of using the VW tool, I just used two 1/8" thick pieces of Al plate (purchased at Lowe's) to lock each camshaft individually, as shown by the red arrows in the picture below. You can use pretty much any 1/8" thick metal or dense plastic plate for this purpose.)

i wouldn't use wood...it may well splinter and bits of wood in an engine can't be healthy.

Fair point. I just thought of that.

A bit cut out of an scrap Golf Mk3 rear bumper should do the trick. I'm pretty sure that's about 4mm thick..
