Lowlifedubber 9
Hi lads,im new to posting on here but ive been a member for some time.Ive read just about every thread on here in preparation for the engine conversion on my MK3 Golf.Well the time has come and ive finally bought an engine.....2 in fact.A bit of pot luck really but i have bought 2 engines off a guy that bought a job lot of stuff in an auction from a VW enthusiast in Lincolnshire. One is just a standard AAA OBD2 block and the other is an overbored 3.0 with Wossner low comp pistons. Now the guy swears blind that it is a 3.0 and i have no reason to disbelieve him, either way i shall be buying them as i got them at a good price.Im picking them up on friday and i will get to work stripping them down to the last ut and bolt and putting an expensive order in to VW.However id like to check for myself if the 3.0 is actually what he says it is.Sooo what internal bore measurement am i looking at to clarify it is a 3.0?Im sure the pistons will have markings on them but id like to check for bore wear and size before i go to the expense of getting the block magnafluxed and skimmed. Is there a chart or a guide anywhere so i can check?Im a mechanical engineer so have all the tools needed for measurements etc. Thanks lads.Gary
cabrioman 6
the bore size should be 83mm mate that as close to 3.0 as you can get 2994 CC i think ??!!
Lowlifedubber 9
You superstar thanks Tony,im hoping finding new rings and bearings for these pistons wont be too much of a pig to source.Looking forward to tearing them down though! It will be my favourite part of the build Thanks again Tony
Daverse 175
I was watching that auction, and missed it by a minute! damn you!!!
cabrioman 6
should be easy enough to find them id go to Wossner for the rings so they match the pistons, as for bearings can get race speck ones or the correct sized ones from VW
Lowlifedubber 9
PMSL sorry Dave,i see your in Lincoln too.I bought both of them that he had for sale.Apparently from a vw nut from Holbeach, spoke to him on the phone today and he mentioned the guy mentioning pistons by wassup,so im guessing that could be wossner lolI was bidding on this in Donny though, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170785130217?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619#ht_500wt_1069Spoke to him via email and he seems very clued up and has no end of other parts.I pretty damn sure he will be on here lol

cabrioman 6
can do mate or get them from ECP as they normally use VW bits just grind the numbers off ....
Lowlifedubber 9
Really!Bugger me i use them all the time using Golfgtiforums 25% off discount code and never knew that!Do you know if there are any standalone 2.8vr6 engine specific workshop manuals out here?Im not a fan of Haynes and cant seem to find a Bentley manual anywhere! Daverse 175
Hmm I guess I could forgive you.. Although you may have to pick it up im afraid as I dont have a van anymore. Anyway its here if you so desire
Lowlifedubber 9
Thanks Dave that would be very handy.Im set for getting it in and out of the van ive decided my tow pole and a couple of chains will get them in and out of the van but when it comes to putting one of them up on the stand a hoist would be very handy! It wouldnt be until next week though if you still have it.If not i might still rope you into helping me an another lift it up there while the missus puts the bolts in the block.Id fit an electric hoist in my garage roof but all the ceiling is plasterboarded in so cant find a decent joist to stick one on
Daverse 175
Yeah I'll have it then, we could use it for getting it out of the van and for placing on the stand, those blocks are bloody heavy to lift! Give us a bell on 07931728566 if you like, as I'm not sure when I'll be on the computer next. I live in woodhall spa, not sure if thats too far for you?

matty.vrt 120
i would be happy if it had 83mm pistons in tho as allot of people class that as 3litre correct or not.
Lowlifedubber 9
i would be happy if it had 83mm pistons in tho as allot of people class that as 3litre correct or not.Yeah i did consider that' date='im not one for skimping on cost at all but as i can see the engine build is going to cost me upwards of £2k having oversized pistons already was a small relief. If it comes too i will certainly buy some. But im all for info 1st buy later so im just trying to sponge up all the knowledge i can.Current umms and arrrs areBig valve head on f.i engine. Is it worth it?If i get the head skimmed to within an inch of its life like this[img']http://image.turbomagazine.com/f/24839603%2Bw750%2Bst0/turp_0103_10_z%2Bvolkswagen_golf_vr6_turbo%2Bvr6_head.jpgam i wasting my time as eventually i will be fitting a spacer gasket when i go f.i?Cams,i have reason to believe i have after market cams in the other engine. Is there a way of measuring the lobes to get an understanding of whether they are standard or not?How can i work out the stroke on my unidentified conrods? My crankshaft looks like the oil holes where the shells go(conrods)have been elongated,is this to help with oil flow as ive not seen it on other cranks? Why couldnt i have a cheaper hobby like collecting old batteries or something?lol

FishWick 21
83mm Wossners have "06306" stamped into the crown, which is a way to indentify them easily.Big valve head and cams definitely worth it. I found 50hp from +1mm bigger valves and Schimmel 263 cams, from the same boost pressure. The more air you can cram into the cylinders, the better :-)

cabrioman 6
if you go to schimmel performance they do a upgrade head set its about £500 plus shipping and fitting ..... http://www.spturbo.com/onlinestore/index.php/volkswagen/mk3-94-98/vr6/engine/cylinder-head-valvetrain/stainless-high-flow-intake-valve-39mm-47.html
Lowlifedubber 9
Nice one Tony, would you suggest getting 1.0 or 2.0mm oversize?Bear in mind i will be N/A for 3-6 months to bed the fresh engine in,then go f/i with a supercharger.
