tjsmudger 2
Hi,Was going down the local duel carriageway .I went to change gear and there was nothing, got to the lights to turn right again I went to engage first, nothing!! You can hear what sounds like the clutch plates rubbing together when I lift the clutch. Anyhow, got towed home by a pal. Any ideas anyone, seeing as my mechanical skills go as about as far as turning a key to start the engine!CheersTel

pfennell 0
have you checked your drive shafts which goes into the gearbox as the bolts may have come loose and fell out....just a quick one
tjsmudger 2
Nope, would that be a easy thing for me spot
pfennell 0
yer have a look where the drive shaft comes out the back of the wheel hub and give it a shake,,if it moves then theres you problem...be easier to turn your wheel to get better access....or you can have allok behind the engine from the top and look if there is a gap between the box and shaft again you can wiggle it from there... tjsmudger 2
Not the driveshafts, not the gear linkage. Crazy!!
tjsmudger 2
Anyone have any other ideas what it could be???
VR6Pete 1,455
sounds like it could be the gear selector unit in the gearbox?
tjsmudger 2
Big job?
VR6Pete 1,455
not 100% sure if im honest, if your box is foobered, you can usually pick up a complete box for about £150, and its as simple as a box swap...2 hr job might as well do clutch while your there if its knocking on abit... tjsmudger 2
Reet, cheers and thanks for you input. Let's start the box hunt!
DanH 1
its a tough one......drive shafts look fine from under bonnet...clutch seems to operate.....was thinking diff internals but theres no grinding or holes (i can see).....selector cables ok...do there selector forks brake on these? seen worn but not broken ones.....and pete check ur admin account...pm'd backon that one! Dickyvr6 0
I may be able to help.. Mine did this last year, exact same discription of faults as mine.. At first i thought it was the box but infact it was the clutch. The very centre of the clutch which slides on to the splines of the engine broke away from the rest of clutch so all it was doing when putting in gear was turning the broken part on the clutch if that makes sence :-)Â
tjsmudger 2
Dicky, you could be right on this, it does sound something like that! Dan, do you agree?
tjsmudger 2
Dicky, did this just result in a new clutch?
Dickyvr6 0
Yer, the broken part stays connected to the clutch sounds odd, but when i took it off, it took me a while to relise as it looked fine, till i put my finger throught the center of the clutch and span it around and the spline grips stayed still. DanH 1
yea ive seen summit like that before on an octavia. so could be! was hoping it was an easy diagnoses but not being a mechanic or having much experience i dont wanna say for sure i hope it is then theres no excuse for not buying my leather :-p
tjsmudger 2
Dicky you was right, exactly the same happened to mine as what happened to yours!
tjsmudger 2
Dan, leather is on hold. Deposit by wife swiftly placed on a holiday now. Seeing as it was only £200 all in.
tjsmudger 2
My pal phoned me late evening to tell me, "yeah Tel, new gearbox needed, might aswell throw you a new clutch on also, you had better start sourcing a box". Gutted I was, got my iPad out, went on eBay and started the search. The bas@$d had only sneaked quietly down my road, rang me up to wind me up. Waited a moment then revved loudly outside the house. I don't know who was more pleased me, or Cath! Jesus, she jumped out of her seat faster than me, shouting "that's my car". Anyhow, my smile has returned and I'm now a very happy boy!
