When Is A Remap Necessary?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of threads on here about people who get remaps done after doing some mods and people asking if a getting a remap done will improve performance even without mods.

Me personally, i am planning probably cams to go with new induction kit, 6 branch, decat. Not going down the schrick road for the minute coz the pennies dont allow it.

I am assuming a remap in any case will make the vr6 perform better, maybe not in terms of horses, but at least run better.

So my question is, after the above mods, remap?

a remap on a standard car helps iron out flat spots and suchlike i would wait until you have finished your mods as much far as you are going then get a remap UNITED MOTORSPORT seam to do good maps as you can send them your ecu and they can add the chip and remap adn send back to you

When you have a remap it will be sensitive to the mods on the car at that time and will help to get the most out of them. I had a remap done when I had changed inlet, exhaust and decat and it showed a marked difference but I also had a remap again with a change in injector size. Try and be economical with what you get done and above all think of the implications. Over or under fueling will cause failures and lots of £££'s.

What I dont get re the sending ecu away thing is isnt the whole part of remapping to get the best out of your car? How can that be when you send the ecu away?

Shouldnt the ecu be plugged in when they are running the diagnostic machine thingy and using the results to quantify the best settings?

It is possible to re-map using the spec that you give but you are correct that this will be a compromise compared to live mapping and optimising in driving conditions, which takes time and money. You get what you pay for....

Speak to those that do the mapping as i'm sure they will explain the pro's and conns. I've had mine done at United Motorsport for my Golf and Audi and i'm pleased with both.

agree with you here mate I always prefer to have my cars live mapped and then as you say every little thing can be seen and taken into consideration rather than just send something away with a list - I know people who have had positive results with both but each time I come to map mine there is only one choice inmo :)

Once I get the veering sorted I plan to get it dyno'd and see what it is putting out the now, then get the cams etc and remap then see what it is putting out again.

Re the veering, had engine mount changed, tie rod ends changed and although it feels better it is still veering a bit but this time the wheel isnt turning as much.

Hoping the left front being lower 10mm than the right has something to do with it, getting it adjusted in an hour. Will post later with results

Dyno tune for me please. You might get lucky with a generic chip, you might not.

There simply is no better way to tune an engine than give it what it needs whilst it's running there in front of you.

Generic chips rely too much on Motronic doing most of the tuning automatically and code libraries that have worked for other people, but which might not necessarily work for you.

Well back from 3rd garage to look at car and n/s shock is f*kd. Its seized up real good and not adjustable, also the o/s top mount is apparently knakrd which is a pain bcoz its one of the things the first mechanice was supposed to have done which he hasnt , alongwith the o/s/r bearing.

Anyways, just ordered new coilovers all round and this time they wont be set so low.
