michael5556 247
I am considering making one myself using the lower half of the manifold and welding a tube on so I can still use the standard fuel rail etc? How difficult would this be to make? Anyone done it before?
Antihero1981 8
if you search on google there are a few people who done them , also there was a guy selling a few on ebay a while back......think its possible , alot cheaper than buying a shimmel one.....

legvw 0
Not too hard to make, as long as you can tig weld. This is the 1 i made for my car.
michael5556 247
Is that using the lower manifold? And yeah can weld and have equipment to.
bungy 2
Here is one i've found on the net. I Think the way Paul tackled it would give more volume as it does act as a plenum.

FishWick 21
I've often thought about using the lower half of a schrick as the base for a shorty intake for it's balanced runner lengths. Although the ally quality is sheet compared to VW's, so it may not tig up that well.As always, if you're subjecting OE parts to welding, make sure it you get it skimmed afterwards to ensure the mating surfaces are flat. michael5556 247
It would only be the side where it attaches to the upper manifold I would be welding on. Would it still need skimming if i don't touch the mating side of manifold?
FishWick 21
Yip, it's a good idea to get it checked.A fellow VRT chap I know made his own shortcake with the stock lower half and he had no end of running issues with it. Turned out in the end to be a warped mating face because of the welding, so the intake gasket didn't seal properly on 2 cylinders. He got it skimmed flat again and it's been spot on since. michael5556 247
Ah ok! Will skim it when it's made will post up some pictures once it's made should I aim the throttle body down so for the intercoolers? Or just put on a 90 degree bend hose?

Then might concentrate on how it looks, but doubt it it's an addictive bug once you start making it faster
