Hello guys,

Recently picked up a missfire which I thought was the Hall sender, I took the car to VW for diagnostics check - 2 codes:

Hall sender and engine speed controller, later found out that my car doesn't have a hall sender according to matey at vw.

The car is very lumpy at all engine speeds, sounds like its running on 5 and sometimes 4 cylinders. But when I take it for a long journey it clears up for a few days, then misteriously comes back.

Matey at vw reckoned it could be the ht side of things, but I'm dubious as I don't want to spend money on the HT leads and find out its the coilpack.

What do you guys think?

Cheers. ?!

first off, don't trust anyone at vw...they often don't know what they're talkin about.

was it the same guy who checked the codes as it was who said it doesn't have a hall sender? or, as i'm suspecting, was it a mechanic who did the codes, and then you asked in parts for the hall sender? if its the latter, the reason he thought it didn't exist is cause its called the impulse sender on their system.

were the codes checked with the engine off? this would explain the engine speed sensor fault code...as it wont have a reading cause the engine ain't turning.

the best way to check fault codes is to reset them and then drive the car a while then check them again. though if your fault is intermittant it won't show up the second time unless the prob has occured in between.

Cheers guys for the replies, I am a little dubious about vw but there ain't anywhere else to go around my area, there ain't any vw specialists around that I know of.

I wasn't there to see the diagnostics being checked, but the same codes came up as before.

It's going in tomorrow, to get the HT leads and coilpack checked.

What HT leads would you recommend?
