nickbee 1
In terms of bhp per £, boring out your engine is terrible. Either source a 2.9 or do something different (get a six-speed gearbox, lower ratios = more aceleration = more ).
dubloke 4
i have a 3.1 in the workshop ready to go back in once i've determined the damage from dropped valve! i bought 2.9 engine/gearbox/ecu etc complete and had that bored and stroked by tsr. the biggest you can bore the 2.8 safely to is 3.0, as the piston walls become too thin, so i was informed! although the price of a rebuilt 2.9 exchange at tsr is @ £3000 the last time i looked! acf8181 0
agree with nickbee...do the box (get sealth to rebuild it as a six speeder with custom ratios and final drive, and a torque biasing diff).apparantly is like adding a serious dose of bhp to the car...but for less money. (you're talkin £1500 max, fitted)
Guest Olly_K
thanks guys, i've heard that boring is tricky, might have a look at the gearbox a bit later (just managed to persuade the wife into the VSR!)
VR6Steve 0
Think you can bolt a 2.9 bottom end on new for £800 ish. Gearbox option sounds very interesting.
Guest Olly_K
ok, this is gonna sound really thick but what is the bottom end ?the lower part of the block from the head (not including it) down ?
VR6Steve 0
Yep the main bit below the head, excluding the gearbox.
jcorallo 0
For info - the £800 sees you with a brand new block with new pistons direct from VW. It doesnt include crank, conrods, bolts, bearings, oil pump etc etc etc etc etc its just a block and 6 pistons.Jules
Guest Olly_K
so in theory could i just buy that and use my old crank, etc ?
dubloke 4
eerrr no, not really! that'd be like replacing 4 spark plugs and leaving two old ones in!
Guest Olly_K
oh ok !
antera309 3
You would need to get your crank reground before fitting it into the new block. This doesn't actually cost that much if you remove the crank yourself and send it into the regrinders on its own. It gets sent back with a new set of shims, ready to go on. antera309 3
Does the Corrado engine not have a longer-throw crank, though? Not too sure.
Hiten 0
If you need any work done i'd speak to Grant Motorsport. When it comes to VR6's he the man as he builds most of the engines in the VW Cup.
