How to tell a genuine garrett t61?

Recommended Posts

I've done loads of searching etc and every single picture I can find is identical with mine, and does not have a blue plaque on the compressor housing.. all of the writing is identical to my turbo.. anyway....

just taken it to a 'turbo specialist' for advice of a wastegate, who told me that it wasn't a real garrett because the blue plaque wasn't there, and apparently because he's a 'specialist' he said it was the wrong colour, but funnily enough the compressor housing is exactly the same colour, size, writing as a gt35 that i've seen!

His attitude was terrible and even though I was interested in a tial 38mm wastegate, he said stuff like 'get it into your tiny brain that it'll damage the car' and all this crap. Aswell as dropping my turbo back into the box in my boot, luckily it had tonnes of bubble wrap in. Also saying the external wastegate I had was rubbish and I should throw it in the bin as I went out.

I've never been so close to punching someone because of their attitude, so threw the tial down and walked out. He followed me out and was all apologetic at the thought of loosing £230 for a tial wastegate saying some rubbish about he was sorry and that so I just said f*ck ya a drove off.

For anyone who doesn't want to be spoken to like a kid don't go to Doug Sport Turbo Specialists.

it should have the lettering embossed on the housing. just coz the tag aint there dont mean sqaut. it could of got pulled off. sounds like he was just being an arse hole, and slagging off the bits you had in the hope he could get you to buy his stuff.

I agree with you Gavin... his attitude was horrific though.

He said that it was the wrong colour too.. so also says he doesn't know that the T61 and GT35r compressor housings are nickel plated to stop them from rusting...

He said that the plaque wasn't there which meant it was a fake. But the plaque I've really only seen there is only the old T60-1's.

And the thing that shocked me maybe the most was when he asked where it originally come from. I replied Stealth Racing.. nothing wrong there. Now for a turbo specialist and tuning place to turn around and say "well where's that then? Some place in America that imports them from china and sells them here?"

W**ker can't even get close to his lack of knowledge and attitude.

spot on. Wish I could have recorded it for future amusement. Think he thought I was think, only just turning 20 in best clothes, don't think he understood that I've just done NVQ level 3 in motor vehicle, and have a good knowledge of turbo's as I'm not stupid enough to do no research before I buy.

And another thing... he didn't come up with an answer when I asked him why a Chinese copy turbo would be water cooled... I'm sure that'd cost much more to machine and mould and I'm sure the Chinese copy's are going to be as simple as possible!
