Autowerke, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh....

Recommended Posts

Just had some work done on my pride n joy... here's a copy of what i'e written in a previous thread (engines and tuning section)....

Car was taken into Autowerke in Edinburgh, originally diagnosed G28 sensor problem. Also asked them to fix a nosie coming from the rear brakes and to sort sloppy gear linkage problem. Was quoted £78 for linkage parts plus labour, called to find out how Auotwerke were getting on, only to be told that they had ordered the wrong parts for the gear linkage... correct parts would actually be £250 and oh, by the way, we just went ahead and ordered the parts and fitted them. They also said the stalling was being caused by a faulty fuel pressure regualtor, so I ok'd getting that replaced. Next day regualtor was fitted... didn't solve problem. So they carried out more tests and said the fuel pump and housing needed replacing too - extra £200. I collected car next day, drove 3 miles before it stalled. Called Autowerke who advised me to fill the tank with petrol as it was low (?!), so i put half a tank in... car stalled , engine was rough all the way back to Autowerke, had to keep revving the engine to stop it stalling. 2 days later I'm told the problem is solved.... they have replaced engine speed sender and also ecu relay. I paid for all work carried out except the speed sender and relay and labour involved in replacing those parts.... £873 to fix gear linkage, caliper noise and stalling/rough idle. Do you think I am being unreaonable when I think I've been treated unfairly? I've been charged £180 more for gear linkage parts than i was quoted (i wouldn't have paid the extra as I've had the car 2 years with sloppy gear change and i've got tax, mot and insurance this month!), the caliper still makes a noise and i've now got a new fuel pump and pressure regualtor which didn't solve the problem. They still want me to pay for the speed sender (called hall sender on box - part number 021 906 433 A) next month when i get paid. I'm inclined not to... where do i stand legally and what would you guys do? I've explained i'm not happy, now i've had a day to not get stressed about what theyre doin to my car I think i should tell em that I'll get the caliper replaced elsewhere and the cost of the sender will cover all the hassle and the extra cost of the linkage which i didn't authorise them to replace. They said the linkage was replaced without my authorisation due to a 'communication error' between their staff!

At least i've got my car back and it is running sweet... except for the caliper noise. Sorry if this is a long thread but I couldn't really make it much shorter!

your thoughts n comments would be mucho appreciated!

I'm no authority on legal matters but, if they are having communication trouble with each other, i suppose it woiuld be the top bosses job to sort it out, and the only way they're gonna do that, is with a nice persuasive kick up the arse. Don't see why u should pay for other peoples incompetance, so the least they should do is fork out for the hall sender and if you're feeling brave, ask them to sort out the rear caliper as it was their job to do it in the first place. Did u get written quotation from them? Always get these things written down so theres no comebacks. Hope you get it sorted m8, and remember, TAKE NO SHIT from them, if they pride themselves with their work, they'll wanna have you as "another satisfied customer". Only MHO though! ;)

I've just had Mike O'neill, owner of Autowerke, call me at work to say he has been handed a copy of my comments on this forum! He has advised me that my comments are 'slanderous' and he will be contacting his solicitor (i think his wife is a solicitor)! I've advised Mike that this is a forum and I stand by my comments. By the way Mike, I also have receipts to prove that some of the work didn't need to be done. I took my car to your company as you are supposed to be 'experts'. I could easily have taken my car to a cheaper 'back street' garage where i would expect the mechanics to try fixing various parts until they eventually solved the problem.... you guys should be able to diagnose a problem first time, and if you get it wrong you shouldn't expect the customer to foot the bill. My car was eventually fixed, however I paid way more than it should have cost! You will also see that i added an updated comment on this matter where I actually pionted out you had done me a favour! You eventually solved the problem, but please don't think you really did me any huge favours, the bottom line was I ended up out of pocket!

Needless to say, regardless of the dodgy call I received this morning, I would not use Autowerke again and would not recommend them to anyone. They give average service at above average prices. Mike seems to be a reasonably nice guy, but reading my comments obviously hit a raw nerve.

That's business. :)

The dosh/parts were sorted when the car went through it's MOT in March... the original posting of this thread was way back in FEbruary, it's taken until now for my comments to get back to Autowerke.

I manage a busy business and can only say that it's fair enough if a customer is unhappy with service that they can make fair comments regarding the service they have received and also take their business elsewhere... I wouldn't have it any other way!

:)

i think mike o`neil should get his solicitor/ wife (legal rep) as they hate being called that! to check up on the law regarding slander! if a comment is made and is of genuine poor service or incompetence from a company or establishment then it is the /buyers/customers/authors right to complain! prehaps trading standards might want to have a chat with this garage proprietor on the the flip side????? under promise over deliver is always a good bench mark for trade is it not?

whe you say sloppy gear change, describe sloppy,

mine had a sloppy gear change when i got it, put up with it for a couple of months, but when i actually bothered to look at it turned out to only be a circlip that had broken on the bottom of the gear lever,

did you check what they where changing?

The part they replaced was in the engine bay, I asked for the old part so I could look at it. Unfortunately I'm not a mechanic, can change oil and wheels, that's why I took the car to a 'specialist'. They did sort the problem, but didn't inform me that they had seriously under quoted for the parts and went ahead and replaced the part anyway!

The gear problem was solved, though I was well out of pocket!
