nickg123 0
Sat in traffic last night, i had my window down slightly, and around 1k revs, there's quite a noticable "rattle" sort of sound from the engine.I know it's Chain driven, my car's a 1997 P Reg, is it likely to be the Chain Tensioners or something? Mileage is 83k, it's not that loud but doesn't sound particularly nice that's all?
stu h 0
could it be the exhaust heat shield rattling / vibrating??used to do it on my mk2 at 3k revs. think is a common complaint on mk3's (?)
nickg123 0
It's a lot lower down the revs, around the 1k mark, just before - literally if you just press the pedal slightly it starts to do it..... i'll get that checked though - thanks mate.Just paranoid i'm going to need the Chain and Tensioners doing ;-)
VR6Pete 1,455
mine is on 83k and the chains need doing, going through a particular echoy area (like drive thru) it's even worse! just rev ur engine slighty and listen to the engine
acf8181 0
does sound like chains...whcih reminds me, i have some scary pics of what happened on a '96 highline at 108k. i'll upload them and post them.
Slim 0
I hate to scare you but it sounds like you've got one of these under your bonnet:
nickg123 0
lol @ Rattler pic!How can i tell if it's the chain then? It's definitely bad when parked up next to a wall, sounds rattly....
Seademon 0
Oooh mine has the same top end rattle !dodge Mines a P reg with 66k miles on it - taking it to the Nurburgring in June so if it is the chain/tensioners Im gonna get them done before I do a 1500 miles trip where I'll be pretty much flat out most of the way! nickg123 0
Hmm can't really tell from that.Next question - does anyone know roughly how much it costs to get this done at a decent Non VW Garage?
acf8181 0
£600they shouldn't really be going at 60k though (disclaimer - i ain't saying they're fine though).seademon - i was in the same situation last year, get it done now so you know its fine.
nickg123 0
£600 Ouch!!!Don't really see what choice i have to be fair, it sounds like it needs doing going by the descriptions on here........ gutted!Didn't expect to have to spend £600 on a VR6 within 2 months of ownership, i thought it'd go way past 100k without any major work being done! simey 0
I had a rattle and thought it was the top end, it turned out piston 1 & 2 were hitting the head. Hopefully it will be just the chains..
badboyV6 4
It could be tappets mind you, mine sound a bit shitty occasionally. 65k sounds a bit low low for a work chain- as ACF says though - disclaimer get it checked though as you never know!!
acf8181 0
you could whip the inlet manifold/cam cover/coilpack/add water pump/tensioner bolt/top chain cover off (in that order) and have a look at the condition of them yourself first.
Seademon 0
I'll get the guys that usually work on my car to check it out & I'll definately get it done if it is teh chain - much rather shell out for that than a new engine! It does seem to quieten down once the engine is hot so could be just the tappets - I'll get it checked!
