Hi guys!

My Golf has an aftermarket Sony head unit, and some 6 x 9's - this is as i bought it......... so don't blame me for the Sony HU or 6 x 9's hehe

Can anyone tell me what speakers are in the car, as standard and how many of each there are?

There seems to be speakers everywhere i look so it would be nice to know what they are size wise as i'm thinking of replacing them all.

They sound pretty good but as the Golf is such a solid car i reckon it would sound top with some good equipment in there!

Mine definately are 6.5 all round. I brought some component sets for the back and full range for the front the other day and didnt have many problems fitting them, the speaker grills just pull off.

Only problem is the vibration, spent all day saturday Dynamatting the drivers side door which seems to have helped, fingers are cut to bits though :(

Don't buy full rangers, buy some decent components and put the tweeters in the standard positions - you'll get much better stereo imaging that with full ranges in the doors pointing at your ankles!

BTW, the speakers are the same in 3 or 5 door.

Agree, dont go for full range. get some components to start. Or you could buy a small amp and amp up the standard speakers - you might be suprised.

I'd recommend spending some money getting a really good set of components for the front, the rear speakers aren't that important in the grand scheme of things, a cheaper set should suffice.

I can't recommend Focal components highly enough, there's a group buy on the Corrado Forum at the moment where you can get a set of Focals with an RRP of £220, for £150, and if they get 4/5 more people wanting them, they'll throw in free Dynamat for your doors. I'd check it out, a fair bit of cash but more than worth it once you hear them.

i concure without as well.

make sure you get three way components for the front (i.e. ones with a separate three way crossover as opposed to ones with an in-line tweeter crossover) as the latter has to run from the main speaker so you'd have to put an extra wire through the big door plug...which would be a major PITA!

i recommend caliber stuff...they do two different components, one with 3 way crossover, one with in-line(cheaper)...use the expensive ones for the front and cheaper ones for the rear. huets are the cheapest from what i've found. work very well off the headunit as well, or amped up...and they come with loads of tweeter mounts inc one perfect one for the mkIII dash.

Sony headunits have never been known that well for their sound quality, i got quite into ICE a couple of years back, everyone i met said that Sony Car Audio was not that impressive..... maybe that's not the case now but this was what i was told.

Bit like 6 x 9's, everyone had them but people in the know hate everything they stand for, a speaker should never be Oval, plus they take too much sound to the rear of the car.....

In most cars i've just had a set of 6" Comp's up front running off an amp, then some small speakers for rear fill with a single 12" sub, this was always the best setup for me, but with the Golf i figured i may as well replace all 4 of the 6.5" Speakers as they've already gone to the hassle of mounting them in the back :)

Thanks for all the ideas guys, i'll start having a look around.

A good solution for the Mk3 is to go for:

In the front, 3-way components with 6.5" bass units in the doors, 3" midrange in the dash and tweeters attached to the top of the dash grilles. This will give you all your clarity & stereo imaging.

6.5" full range in the rear panels. Go for high rated ones with nice big magnets here for lots of punchy bass!

4-way amp to run all the above.

Sub box with it's own mono amp in the boot to handle the rumble...

This will give you a stealthy, but great sounding system.
