Mis-Fire rough running SOLVED

Recommended Posts

Thought i'd try and locate and clean the Hall sender yesterday, Found it eaisily, under the plastic top cover RHS of engine.

whipped it out and it was indeed covered with a film of dried on oil. cleaned it with a damp cloth till nice and shiny, and cleaned the electricla contacts back to brite metal with a bit of scotch brite and a screwdriver.

Re-installed the lot and WOW!

having the car only a few weeks and thinking it was fast! damn! its even faster and totally smooth now! goes like a rocket!

I can even drive in 5th Gear at 1000 rpm and accelerate without it jumping and spluttering!

Best 30 mins EVER spent doing car maintenance!

Funny thing is that i got the car LOADS cheaper cos it had this slight misfire/lumpiness from 1000-2000 rpm... now its sorted for no outlay what so ever! bonus!

yours smugly

My car ran like real crap for a while, kept cutting out under acceleration. Got pretty dangerous when trying to pull out into fast moving traffic.

Booked it into garage but sods law being what it is, the fault had disappeared for that afternoon!

Fault reappeared shortly after me getting it back, and pissed me off for another few weeks.

Used my huge knowledge of engines to take off every sensor/plug i could see and blow on it.

Problem solved!

Is the hall sensor the same as the cam position sensor?

it sure is - a cylinder shape thats meant to be bright silver - i cleaned mine and the car was wheel spinning like hell (after lifting the clutch lol) then went back to normal - i think im going to replace it, added a BMC CDA filter as well and blooming hell - the standard air intake restricts the car sooo much!!!

I doubt it makes much difference to be honest. The sensor is designed to get oil on it, as is the engine speed sensor but how often do you touch the latter?

If you unplugged the batteryy before removing the sensor it is more likely to be the effect of resetting the ECU that's brought about the changes.

Unless the sensor is covered in engine swarf, then I can't really see a film of oil affecting the sensor's magnetism. Sorry to be a party pooper!

i reckon it depends, with me the power went back to normal and a few members reckon the sensor is probably faulty, i will be changing it soon as it can cause a huge BHP loss if it is not right, i got pushed up the motorway last time by a vectra - P plate and not even a sri/v6
